Disc crashed; what to do?

Hi all,

One of my disc crashed (a WD 2.0TB / 64mb wd20ears). The disc are in a X-RAID2 config in a RND2000

First, i need to make a backup from the latest files that aren't offsite. So, can i attach the good disc to a desktop-pc with Linux for backup?

Second, the wd20ears isn't available anymore. Can i use a wd20earx as replacement instead? So, that a wd20earx and wd20ears are in one config?

Thanks in advance!

    This is a duo v2 correct? http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how ... -or-nv-v2/

If so, the wd20earx is on the HCL, and can be used with your existing wd20ears. A WD20EFRX would also work, and has a longer warranty and no issues with load counts / wdidle3 tweaking.

On backup, you could potentially attach the disk to a desktop PC (powering the NAS down first!).

Though you should also consider network backup.
  • Ì think, it's the 2 ;-)

Yes, off course, i power the NAS first down ;-) But it's safe to replace the dead HDD with a new, compatible one to make a new X-RAID config?

And is it possible to read the data with one disc from the NAS?

    (a) its safe to replace the dead drive, I suggest doing a hot-add (insert the drive with the NAS running)
    (b) You should be able access all your data with just the one drive. That is the point of RAID after all.

It is important to be certain about whether you have a v1 or a v2.
  • What, a hot-add?

    I think it's a v1, because
    - the firmware is 4.2.22
    - the looks is like this http://www.readynas.com/simulators/frontview/home.htm

If you are running 4.2.22, then you don't have a duo at all. You have an x86 platform (ultra-2, ultra-2 plus, or pro-2).

The model should be listed on the home page of Frontview.

A "hot-add" means inserting the new disk with the NAS running. The advantage of that method is that the NAS detects the new disk insertion, which it cannot do if you insert the drive with the NAS powered down.
  • Ok, tnx.

Now, i'm not quite sure if it's the disc. The logs shows an error that the power is to low. Running with one disc goes fine. With two, one disc hangs.

If you are getting a power out of range error you should check your warranty status and contact netgear support via support.netgear.com. Sort out your product model and purchase date first.
