Factory reset without losing your data.

Full credit to http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306

First retrieve your data. For this you'll need :
1- a sata 2 capable PC.
2- Linux boot disc (CD or USB stick). These instructions are for debian so (Ubuntu, Linux mint)
Optional : A spare hard disk. If you're running two drives in the readyNAS you can get away with using one.

Simple step by step guide to mounting Sparc-based ReadyNAS Drives in x86-based Linux:
Tested on brand new install of Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit x86), no other dependencies- 23rd Jan 2011
In a terminal window:

(1) sudo su
(2) apt-get install fuseext2
(3) apt-get install lvm2
(4) modprobe fuse
(5) vgscan
(6) vgchange -ay c
6.5 mkdir /tmp/nas-drive
(7) fuseext2 -o ro -o sync_read /dev/c/c /tmp/nas-drive

You should now be able to see the mounted files in the /tmp/nas-drive directory

(NB: Without the “-o sync_read” option to fuseext2 I had problems with copying large files. It kept saying the source file wasn’t found. After adding this option everything worked fine).

(2 disks)
- Perform factory reset with the remaining disk in the ReadyNAS
- Now copy your data from the /tmp/nas-drive to your spare. (Alternatively back to the restored NAS)

(1 disk)
- Once the data is safely backed up, Perform factory reset with the disk in the ReadyNAS
- Copy the data back at your convenience.

Hope this is useful to anyone else who find they have a broken NAS.

  • I assume this impies that one of the failed NAS drives has been mounted in the PC before running Linux. Where is /tmp/nas-drive created?

    This is a procedure for Sparc e.g. Duo/NV+ (v1).

I don't recommend relying on this. If you have problems it's better to contact support. They may be able to remote into your system and fix a problem (if that's needed) though there may be a fee attached to this.

Also make sure you have a backup. Recovering data using a PC really is a last resort.
  • DSharbaugh . you need to create the directory using "mkdir /tmp/nas-drive"

mdgm - You are correct. It's only known to work with the Sparc Duo. Unfortunately Support couldn't (Wouldn't give timely support) so I needed to try something else.
And yes, this was the last resort. I had already tried and OSA re-install. Sadly that doesn't fix a FUBAR'd disk.
