HDD for Ultra plus 2
So I've done the research and know that we want the Readynas Ultra Plus 2.
But as you know they come diskless.
I've tried to research HDD's form the HCL but just end up getting confused.
We're looking to store music and photos, stream the music through Squeezebox as well as kids laptops and keep the photos safe as they are not only precious but also my customers as I run a photography business.
What do you recommend that I can get easily in the UK - preferably online and won't cost more than £200 the pair?
Thanks in advance
Judith

- yoh-dahGuideJudith, are you unable to find the drives listed in the HCL in UK?
- judemargAspirantThe only 3TB I can find is the Western Digital Caviar Green WD30EZRS.
Together with the NAS they'll take me just over my £500 budget, but reviews of Caviar Green drives in general are very mixed ranging from 'they're rubbish' to 'love em'. If I drop to 2TB I can knock over £100 off the price but I might regret that 12 months down the line.
What do you think?
The other thing I'm a bit nervous about is the firmware. How old is 4.2.16? If I have to upgrade the firmware is it difficult.
I should perhaps add we run a mix of ubuntu and windows in our house. - yoh-dahGuide

Make sure you do stick with what's in the HCL. It may look like we're not putting all that's available, but in fact if the drives are not in the list, it's usually because, we've found issues with that, and we're not going to recommend them. Also, you'll run into issues with Support as they'll generally refuse support if your problem ends up being drive-related. And if you do run into issues with a drive, you'll have either 3 or 5-yr warranty from the manufacturer, and because you are running RAID, a disk failure won't be catastrophic as if you only had a single disk. The other thing I'm a bit nervous about is the firmware. Not at all. It's as easy as a couple clicks and a reboot.
