Migration from Ultra2 to RN214, Drive swop

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 [X-RAID2] running 2 x 2TB drives with RAIDiator 4.2.28 firmware.

This has seen very good service but is now nearing capacity.

I am thinking of upgrading to a RN214. My application is mostly as a Home Media Hub, 3D HD with future proofing to UHD.

Can I simply swop my existing drives into the 214 and add a third 3TB drive? This will give me an immediate additional 3TB of storage with an option for future increase ?

  • The drive formatting is not compatible, so you will need to copy your data off to external storage if you want to reuse your existing drives.

Many thanks. I think that my strategy will be then to run the new 214 with a single new drive, transfer the data from the Ultra and then swop the two Ultra drives into the 214 and reformat them. Can anyone envisage any snags ?

That should work, assuming no disk errors during the expansion.

Though I'd get new disks myself (perhaps larger) and use the ultra2 to back up critical files on the RN214.
