Mismatched drive replacement
I have ReadyNas NVX Pioneer Edition, 4x 2TB Seagate ST32000542AS, its been running flawlessly for 4+ years. It's running the latest level 4.2.27, running as RAID Level X-RAID2, 4 disks
When I reboot the NAS, or the power goes off, the NAS reports
* Disk 2 (model Seagate ST32000542AS, serial number 5XW21NFX) has 433 reallocated sectors. Reallocated sectors might be acceptable, but they are often the first warning sign that a disk is starting to fail.
This goes up by 10-sectors everytime it boots, at no other times do I get an alert. So, assuming its a real error, I can get a replacement drive from Amazon for $160 direct from Seagate. 512 sectors, 32Mb buffer. From my local Frys I can get a Seagate Barracuda 2TB Serial ATA/600 7200RPM 64MB Buffer Internal Hard Drive which has 4k sectors.
Any reason why I shouldn't get the 2TB drive from Frys to replace the failing one?

- That is a very high count and the drive must be replaced.
First check that the drive cannot be replaced under the 3 year warranty:

If it can't, I would suggest buying either a seagate nas drive:

or a wd red drive:

You should have a backup of the data on the nas. - I agree the drive needs to be replaced ASAP.
Disk warranties have changed over the years, and it also depends on how you purchased (some drives allocated for OEM distribution have shorter warranties). So you do need to check the seagate site.
I'd buy a new drive for the NAS. The RMA from seagate will be recertified, and not new. So keep the replacement drive (if you can get one) as an emergency spare. Based on what I've read here, I'd avoid seagate DM drives. Both Seagate and WDC make NAS-purposed drives that are similar in price to desktop drives. Either get one of those, or get an enterprise drive. vandermerwe wrote:

I had expected to buy a drive, my real question was on compatibility between drives. Does it matter if the ReadyNas has 3x 32mb buffer, 512 block drives and 1x 64Mb, 4k block drive?

You do need to make sure the replacement is at least 2 TB.- Thankyou!!!
