No Shares Found -AFTER DRIVE SWAP

Please any help would be appreciated!

SYSTEM INFO:
Model: ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition [X-RAID2]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.20
Memory: 2048 MB [4-5-5-15 DDR2]
Hard Drives: 6 x 1TB Seagate ST31000340NS

DAY 1: (Sunday)
I was getting sector error on my drive #6.

DAY 2: (Monday)
Same errors

DAY 3: (Tuesday) - Today
Drive failure detected.

So, I had a spare drive for just such an emergency.
Swapped it out (HOT)... maybe that was a mistake?
System detected the new drive an started resyncing.
It finished very quickly an I received another error:
RAID sync finished on volume C. The array is still in degraded mode, however. This can be caused by a disk sync failure or failed disks in a multi-parity disk array.

So, I rebooted the system through Frontview.
New Error:
***** File system check performed at Tue Jun 4 12:41:09 EDT 2013 ***** fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
fsck.ext2: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/c/c Could this be a zero-length partition?

New Error:
The paths for the shares listed below could not be found. Typically, this occurs when the ReadyNAS is unable to access the data volume. media

Rebooted again with volume check selected:
New Error:
***** File system check forced at Tue Jun 4 13:05:50 EDT 2013 ***** fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010) e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/c/c Possibly non-existent device?

New Error:
The paths for the shares listed below could not be found. Typically, this occurs when the ReadyNAS is unable to access the data volume. media
New Error:
ATA error count has increased in the last day.
Disk 3:
Previous count: 109
Current count: 128
Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.

So now my share does not show up and I am very concerned I may have lost all my data!

Please HELP!
Kevin

  • I'd open a support request at support.netgear.com.

Were you seeing ATA errors on drive 3 before the sector errors?

The hot swap was not a mistake btw.
  • I feel your pain, buddy.
I did just yesterday get my volume back.
Thanks to $200 and Netgear's support.
But since I run my business off this device it was money well spent.

Netgear's communication was weak at best but they know what they are doing tech wise.
Took 5 days including last weekend, doubt any work was done over the weekend but who knows.
Had to put the system in DEBUG mode and sign a wavier allowing Netgear to access my system.

When all was said and done all my data was restored (3.8TBs) and all systems go.
Do yourself a favor invest in a usb back up drive. I know these X-Raid systems are internally redundant but if it goes down for whatever reason your covered. Drives are cheap nowadays.

    Good Luck,
    Kevin

Thank you for your post. It's quite a relief to know there might be some light at the end of the tunnel. You made my day. I'm picking up a 4TB external USB HDD today. I'll be waiting on Netgear to respond to my ticket. I'm really hoping they'll be able to fix mine too.

Did they charge you for the support?

I hear ya and that's always been my belief as well. A NAS is not a backup solution. I've been meaning to get this NAS backed up for a while. I'm already kicking myself for not doing it already. I shouldn't have waited until something bad happened. However, that's not doing me any good right now. I just hope Netgear is able to recover my data.
