NV+ 2TB Limit - Was Disappointed, Now Happy

I bought an NV+ a couple of years back and was happy to see the improved support for Timemachine. But, with just 2 1TB drives I was limited to ~600GB. I did my research and settled on the Western Digital WD20EARS drives - I got 4 of them.

I did the RAIDar upgrade and factory reset and all went well (saved the original drives as a "backup" plan and started clean with the 4, 2TB drives).

I got 5.4 TB's of space - right in line with my expectations. But could not expand the timemachine space above 2TB. After quite a bit of searching, I discovered that the SPARC based machines - including my NV+, do not support files greater than 2TB, nor are there any plans to.

So - my questions are, why even bother selling and certifying new 2TB and larger drives if your file system is stuck in the past? Why even continue to SELL the NV+, when they have no business living in the future? Why not make a note in the certification (like was done to point out that the 4k sector size required a factory reset) saying that timemachine could not make use of more than 2TB? Just what OS do you have on this that can't handle great than a 2TB file size?

I bought this (at quite a bit more than they're selling now) because it was upgradable and a solution for the future. Turns out the future was only a year or two away.

Not sure if this was the original reference, but this the specific limitation I'm referencing: viewtopic.php?f=71&t=49058

  • I'm using "Share" security mode. I did specify "options:tm" for the share. I set the user's home as the share because it didn't show up and the other users in the /etc/passwd (backup, media) had the corresponding shares listed as their home dirs: Here are the last few lines of the ReadyNAS /etc/passwd:

    backup::1000:65534::/c/backup:/bin/false
    media::1001:65534::/c/media:/bin/false
    administrator:!:93:98::/var/local/:/bin/false
    partner:!:99:99::/c/home/partner:/bin/false
    ReadyNAS:$1$d.i1jseA$aVAHe7h4YqUaoqzS89DFN.:96:65534::/var/lib/timemachine:/bin/true
    StudioBackup:$1$CeH1ZfxD$WJ9NVY.wS9BHHuCYKPtBH1:1002:65534::/c/StudioBackup:/bin/true

    The StudioBackup entry was in the file- I only later modified the user home dir and program to try to match what was already there.

    I did add the options:tm to the AppleVolumes.default - but it appears to have been removed after a reboot of the NV+. I saw something about this - is the 4.1.8+ beta required for this? (confirmed - it's being removed on reboot)

    ReadyNAS:~# cat /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default
    "/StudioBackup" "StudioBackup" cnidscheme:dbd allow:StudioBackup deny:"nobody" options:tm
    "/backup" "backup" cnidscheme:dbd forceuid:backup

    You didn't say whether I need to be running Lion for this to work.

    When you talk about users, it's not clear to me if you mean on the Mac or on the ReadyNAS as far as auto mount - it sounds now like you meant a Mac user. I'm confused how the Mac user would have the ReadyNAS share set up -but I'll look at that tomorrow - too tired tonight.

    I copied the .com.apple.timemachine.supported (zero-length) file to /c/StudioBackup - still no luck.

    Question: are you a Netgear support eng, or just a helpful forum member? -jk
  • "Ah! It's THERE!" A direct quote. With most of the steps above, a new share, StudioBackup has appeared on my Time Machine. (I imagine my high school self somehow getting that quote way back in 1974 and trying to imagine what sort of future that'd be from.)

    Much thanks to mdgm, down under, or all the patience and help.

    I'll try to find some time to put something a bit more coherent together, but the basic points were:

    Create a new/modify an existing Share for backup:
    viewtopic.php?f=71&t=55166

    Follow the Lion stuff - why not? (the Studio is / will be on Snow Leopard for a while and works - still not showing up on the newly upgraded Lion machine - I'll keep on that)

    Upgrade to 4.1.8-T9 viewtopic.php?f=17&t=55155

    Copy the /c/.timemachine/.com.apple.timemachine.supported (zero-length) file to /c/<sharename>

    Convert security level from Share to User

    I may start over on the existing timemachine share and actually give each it's own share. I was actually able to get my old G5 running 10.5.8 to see the share in Time Machine with this.

    So - with those - setting up a second (and hopefully additional) share(s), I can make use of the NV+'s capabilities for a while. The one outstanding issue is that the share is still not showing up on my newly upgraded Lion machine. And I need to verify that everything comes up automatically from a cold start. So - thanks a bunch to mdgm.

    Be nice if Netgear could do with this what they did with the legendary 15 step process a few years ago.

    Thanks again.
