NV+ or Ultra

I am almost a complete noob and could really use some advice interpreting the jargon.

First off, what I want to do is set up a centralised storage that can wirelessly stream my media (videos/music) to all the tvs in the house simultaneously. During my research, it seems that the readynas series will do the job with a wireless receiver (e.g. NeoTV 350) connected to each tv. Is this correct? If so, then will the streaming transfer rate of the NV+ be sufficent for standard video files? I am considering the ultra mainly for the faster transfer rate.

I'm a bit of a technological idiot so please forgive me if these are very obvious questions.

  • if I am not mistaken, NV+ support Active Directory integration while Ultra does not support it.

    Correct.

Netgear has chosen to segment their newer products by both hardware and software features, so to get AD you must get a 'pro' series model.

NV+ (v1) supports Active Directory integration. NV+ v2 does not.
  • I originally started this thread and I sincerely thank all who gave me advice. I thought I would post some feedback from my eventual purchase. Afterall we always hear complaints and problems but rarely compliments or solutions. I eventually bought a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 Plus. I have 4 TVs in the house which each have a WD TV live streaming media player attached, 1 x laptop which has been copying a lot of information across to the NAS, an ipod and 3 smartphones, all connected to my households wireless network. So far there have been no problems. I can have movies/tv shows/ music playing on all TVs and the computer without a single bit of lag. This is exactly what I wanted and it is exactly what was produced.

The NV+ is too slow running Squeezebox Server (LogitechMediaCenter) to a Squeezebox Touch over a wired network. Too slow; too slow. The result of much discussion is that this seems to be the fault of the NV+ and not of the server software.

I know some people have had problems streaming to the various Squeezebox devices from an NV+, but I don't think a blanket claim can be made that it's an inherent problem with the ReadyNAS NV+. Personally, I've been using an NV+ for four years and streaming wirelessly to several SB devices simultaneously with no problems. I started with two Squeezebox Duets, then eventually added a Boom, two Radios and two Touches. I routinely (almost every day) run two or three of these devices in sync (i.e. playing the same music simultaneously), and have often had four or more going at the same time. The NV+ can also run different streams (different music to different devices).

My music library is of medium size, around 15,000 tracks. I'm currently running Logitech Media Center 7.7.1, but it worked just fine back when it was Squeezebox Server and earlier releases. My NV+ is running with the factory-installed, standard 256MB of memory. I started with two 500GB drives; after four years and two expansions, it's now running with four 500GB drives. By late this year I expect it will be getting full again, so I will probably install four 1TB drives. (I might decide to upgrade to one of the newer machines from the x86 line.) But my point is that it's inaccurate to simply say the NV+ is "too slow" to run Logitech Media Server and stream to Squeezebox devices, of any model. I do it wirelessly, so I'm sure it would work at least as well wired.
