NV+ (v1) PSU died

Hi ReadyNASians,

So my faithful NV+ died a few days ago due to the PSU overheating. I was greeted with the familiar smell of melted PCB components and found my ReadyNAS powered down and unable to power back up again. I had recently moved the NAS to a new location that had a warmer ambient temperature that must have contributed to the failure. Afterwards I found Yoh-dah's post / service advisory (http://bit.ly/MEBCzt) which i had been blissfully ignorant of for 5 years. I am probably one of the minority of users here who bought their ReadyNAS from Infrant (in Australia), not Netgear.

I did call Netgear for support after I read the advisory. I gave them the serial number which they said was actually an NV, not an NV+ :S. I also mentioned the advisory on the PSU, but they would not offer any help. It's probably to old anyway.

So I followed the advice at Bott's blog (http://bit.ly/NRFSb4) and was very easily able to mount and access the drives http://i48.tinypic.com/122ya7m.jpg.

I did try a couple ATX 1.x PSU's to power up the NAS in the course of troubleshooting until I learned that ReadyNAS PSU's were wired differently.

So from here I am slowly recovering my data and I am pondering the following questions/courses of action. Your recommendations please.

  • Is that service advisory still valid? I'm not so inclined to chase Netgear about it given the age of the unit, but am I entitled to any support for this anymore?

  • My ReadyNAS's mainboard and drive bay card appear ok. Could I buy a replacement PSU (I saw some on Amazon) and expect it to work ok?

  • It looks like I will be in the market for a new ReadyNAS if the option above is not viable. Should i go with an NV+ v2 (or something better?) and will the drives from my old sparc NV+ slot in and gain access to the old array and data?

  • Support got right back to me and shipped a new PSU overnight. Easy to replace and I am back up and running. Pretty amazing for something I bought 7 years and 11 days ago. I am not complaining at all, but I wonder why they are sending these out?

    Survey submitted.

I suspect it is as simple as "the PSUs could start a fire and we would MUCH RATHER ship a new $50 part out than get sued for burning someone's house down".

They will probably replace these defective units forever.
  • Has anyone successfully gotten their PSU replaced if they are out of warranty and their serial number is not in the range mentioned? Also, I've seen mention of adapters that allow you to use other PSUs with the ReadyNAS. Any help on finding them?
  • My ReadyNas NV+ PSU just died last week. It was not in the serial # range of the recall. According to my original Amazon order, it was supposed to have a 5 year warrantee, but it turns out that a check of the serial # through Netgear's website reveals that it has a 3 year warrantee instead. And of course... that three years ended a couple of weeks ago.

Given all that, I was very relieved to find out that, not only does Netgear currently have the PSU for the NV+ in stock right now, but that the cost is only $27 for the part. Very happy with this, I was certain that I was going to have to modify a PSU to work with the ReadyNas.

Any idea on the quality of these replacement PSU's? I'm worried at the fact that mine died after only 3 years, and the fact that some folks are reporting that they might be a fire hazard...

Unfortunately, no link. I placed the order through Netgear's support line. You'll have to give them a call to get one on order.

Speaking of which, I'd love to have a spare PSU on hand. If anybody is able to just straight out ORDER one through Netgear support, please report that. I was going to ask if I could order an extra when I had them on the line, but was amazed that they had them in stock (and for cheap!) and didn't want to press my luck.

BTW, just installed the new PSU. Readynas has booted and is checking FS as I type this. Back in business! :D
  • PSU for a unit within the 'problem' serial number range died sometime last week. Netgear is sending a replacement without charge. Submitted a support ticket online and included the product serial number and also referenced the known power supply problem.

Recommend anyone doing this include your name and shipping address with initial contact, including whether it is a business or home address. Doing so would have likely gotten me my new unit 48 hours faster as this info was subsequently requested and each submission seemed to take about a day for them to respond to.

Despite receiving an automated email saying I needed to send the old unit back before they will ship a new one (unless I pay extra for advanced replacement), they have indicated the replacement unit has shipped and I can discard the failed part.
