NV+ (v1) PSU died
Hi ReadyNASians,
So my faithful NV+ died a few days ago due to the PSU overheating. I was greeted with the familiar smell of melted PCB components and found my ReadyNAS powered down and unable to power back up again. I had recently moved the NAS to a new location that had a warmer ambient temperature that must have contributed to the failure. Afterwards I found Yoh-dah's post / service advisory (http://bit.ly/MEBCzt) which i had been blissfully ignorant of for 5 years. I am probably one of the minority of users here who bought their ReadyNAS from Infrant (in Australia), not Netgear.
I did call Netgear for support after I read the advisory. I gave them the serial number which they said was actually an NV, not an NV+ :S. I also mentioned the advisory on the PSU, but they would not offer any help. It's probably to old anyway.
So I followed the advice at Bott's blog (http://bit.ly/NRFSb4) and was very easily able to mount and access the drives http://i48.tinypic.com/122ya7m.jpg.
I did try a couple ATX 1.x PSU's to power up the NAS in the course of troubleshooting until I learned that ReadyNAS PSU's were wired differently.
So from here I am slowly recovering my data and I am pondering the following questions/courses of action. Your recommendations please.

- Is that service advisory still valid? I'm not so inclined to chase Netgear about it given the age of the unit, but am I entitled to any support for this anymore?
- My ReadyNAS's mainboard and drive bay card appear ok. Could I buy a replacement PSU (I saw some on Amazon) and expect it to work ok?
- It looks like I will be in the market for a new ReadyNAS if the option above is not viable. Should i go with an NV+ v2 (or something better?) and will the drives from my old sparc NV+ slot in and gain access to the old array and data?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced Usercontact Netgear at support.netgear.com
- chirpaLuminaryMy last experience while working there was that Singapore was not honoring the RMAs of those units anymore. Hopefully that has changed.
- melvseeAspiranthi chirpa,
thankfully it has changed. netgear support responded within a day to say contact reseller in singapore for a replacement.
i duly did so and after forwarding netgear support's email about the replacement, they acknowledged it and asked me to bring it in for replacement.
fingers crossed that i will be up and running again soon! - melvseeAspiranta happy ending for me.
swapped my broken NV+ (v1) for a brand new NV+ (v3).
popped my drives back in, power on and everything works as if it never broke down.
simply fantastic. - shadowfixerukAspirantGot home from work last night (Feb 21 2014) to find my PSU had gone "pop". There was a smell of burning and my UPS alarm was going off...
Raised a ticket with Netgear support to find out what my options are - hoping for the same great customer service that other have been recieving earlier in this thread - but will keep you posted on time scales for replies, responses etc..
Anyone have any good ideas in the meantime ?
Cheers
SF - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIs the serial number in the range here: viewtopic.php?p=54911 If so, make sure that Netgear support knows that.
Other options include buying an off-the-shelf PSU and modifying the cable (or purchasing an adapter). Most don't fit in the readynas chassis, so you can end up with something quite ugly. There are posts here on that subject, so google for them if interested.
Or look for a used v1 model.
It is possible to mount the disks in an x86 linux system, assuming you have a system with enough connectors. - shadowfixerukAspirant

Hi Stephen, thanks for the links and great tips.
My ReadyNAS serial number sits plum in the middle of the range given in the link - so i guess this is good news!
I will update my support ticket!
Thanks

Yes. It means you are entitled to a free PSU replacement even though your unit is out of warranty. I would definitely update the ticket with this information.shadowfixeruk wrote: My ReadyNAS serial number sits plum in the middle of the range given in the link - so i guess this is good news! - shadowfixerukAspirantSo i updated the ticket at around 11.40 UK time.
Had a call about an hour later from Netgear in Kuala Lumpa, which diverted to voicemail; was sent an email by Joseph from Level 2 support at the same time, saying a replacement had been authorised. :)
Joseph called back an hour later to check delivery details.
Replacement PSU should arrive on Tuesday.
Great customer service.
Thanks Netgear ( and StephenB!)
SF - bigbill25AspirantThank you for all of the information in this thread. The power went out today and when the power was restored, my NV+ did not come back on. Looking at the "PSU Failures" post, my serial number is right in the meat of them. I contacted support and am hoping for the best!
