Power down or freeze only on weekends???
For the last 3 weeks in a row and a few times at random before that (always on the weekend though) the ready nas 1500 (rackmount 1u) we have has shutdown or frozen. The DCT led (solid green) and the network led (blinking green) directly to the right of the DCT light remains lit but the nas itself is completely offline and not accessible nor is the admin http page. I have to turn it off and then back on. My first thought is this may be power supply related, it seems strange that it runs fine under load all week and then goes down on the weekend when no one is around.
The nas is running egnyte as an addon, other than that it is bone stock with a 3TB raid array (4*1TB).
The last sync that egnyte reports when these freezes or shutoffs occur has always been on a Saturday in the morning which means to me the box is going down Saturday morning every time. There was an update to egnyte that happened about a month ago, maybe their new addon is the problem?
Any thoughts or possibly related stories?
Thanks

- Marto731AspirantBlunder,
The first thought I have is to check Disk scrub. Set to 8 weeks, if on one week.
Are there any scheduled backups at weekends? There must be some coinciding event.
Is it possible that you download logs, and PM or put up a web link? Thanks Marto. - blunderblormAspirantNo backups to this device except the egnyte cloud sync. Basically we have this device to take load off the internet network side. Egnyte addon syncs the data stored on their cloud to this device, those syncs happen non stop. The time between syncs if it is caught up is around 20 seconds.
I can post whatever parts of the log that you would like to see, the only thing that did come up about 2 months ago was 11 reallocated blocks on disk 2, I have a new disk to replace disk 2 but have not swapped it yet.
Everything else is fine, there is nothing in the log about power downs, crashes etc... that I can see anyway. - blunderblormAspirantOh, I forgot to mention, disk scrubs are off entirely. I didn't set this up so I am not sure why it is off. I just maintain it now.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you email your logs zip file?: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/misc/how_do_i_send_all_logs
We do request the entire zip file. As depending on the problem a log may be relevant that is not initially thought of. If the zip file is too big to send then remove a large backup job log from the zip file and send it again (noting this in the email). - blunderblormAspirantI have emailed the log by following the instructions on the page you posted mdgm.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo you have a backup?
I see that at least one of your disks and possibly two are failing.
Two of your disks have a non-zero current pending sector count.
Your disks are not on our compatibility list. I don't recommend using WD Green disks.
Your Load Cycle Counts on these disks are huge. It doesn't look like you've changed the WDIDLE3 timeout.
If you look at disk_smart.log there is a problem with /dev/sdb and possibly /dev/sdc as well.
Also you are running old firmware. Once you have an up to date backup and have replaced the faulty disks (one at a time, wait for resync to complete before moving onto the next disk). - blunderblormAspirantWe do have a backup, this nas is just a way to keep extra traffic off of the internet. It syncs with egnyte cloud, which houses the exact same data. The most we would lose is a few hours from this local drive if it failed.
The drive itself was ordered with WD Greens. I was actually curious about that as well. I started working for this company a little over a year ago. Never in a production environment have I seen standard non enterprise drives. Anyway. I will be replacing disk 2 for certain and will take a look at the smart log. I looked at it a bit. I noticed pre-fail in a few spots. I thought that was due to disk 2 which is the only warning I have gotten from the nas since setting up email reports. - blunderblormAspirantYou are correct about those load cycles being huge, in fact they are twice what the WD greens are rated for (300,000) I believe that green drives unload heads often to save power. Which might be why that is so high. I probably should change the WDIDLE timeout.
I will replace those drives after going through the smart data and also update the firmware. - blunderblormAspirantWhat drives would you recommend (enterprise) for this nas? I generally use Seagate enterprise drives myself, I have also used Hitachi enterprise drives.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI would recommend using enterprise drives from the compatibility list. You should be able to use the brand you prefer, SeaGate.
