Pro Pioneer Dead - Migrate Disks?

Hi (long time user and original infrant NV owner),

I have a Readynas Pro Pioneer (6Bay) RNDP600E-100NAS that has recently stopped working.

I had been receiving some errors stating "3VDUAL power is out of normal range [expected: 3.30 current: 3.10].", so I shut it down via Frontview. The NAS was plugged in to a UPS which is still powering my other NAS and various other devices with no problems. Later that night I tried to start it, and nothing. I have tried various outlets, and power cords to no avail. My first thought was that it must be the power supply, so I ordered an identical replacement and performed the swap. Still nothing. I've tried powering it on without any disks and still nothing. I've left it sitting overnight. Nothing.

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong on the motherboard (no blown fuses, etc). All the cables seem tight. I'm just at a loss. If you have any ideas for this, i'd love to hear them.

Now given that the device itself is borked, what would my migration options be? Could I migrate the 6 disks into a 316?

Any thoughts or recommendations would be extremely helpful!

You can use the 316 or 516 to recover data form the Pro but you would need somewhere to backup to.

Here's what I would recommend (follow these steps exactly, do not do extra steps).

    1. Put a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the 316/516
    2. Update the firmware to latest (currently 6.2.0)
    3. Verify update was successful
    4. Power down, remove the spare disk.
    5. Insert disks from your Pro Pioneer into the 316/516
    6. Power on 316/516
    7. Log into 316/516 at IP displayed on LCD screen or RAIDar
    8. Copy off all the data
    9. Factory Default (wipes all data)
    10. Restore data from backup

Before Step 9 you may wish to remove your disks (label order) and insert disks from the compatibility list for your NAS. It is important to use supported drives. Also if you remove the old array after step 8 and before step 9, if something goes wrong with your backup there is still the old array.

OS6 uses a different RAID format. OS6 on x86_64 devices can boot OS4.2.x for the purposes of recovering data.

Assuming your disks and array are fine this should boot up fine. If it doesn't you will need to contact support and there would likely be a charge for looking into this.
  • Thanks for the advice. I'm guessing the motherboard has died. Too bad there isn't an easy way to replace it.

I'll order a 316 and follow your instructions "exactly". All the disks are labeled.

Hopefully there isn't any problem bringing the array back online. I'll let you know how it goes!

    Thanks for the quick response.
  • Just a follow up on my previous situation.

Your advice worked perfectly mdgm. I followed your steps and am in the process of doing the factory wipe. All the data is backed up to offsite locations to prevent this issue from occurring again.

Do you think there would be any reason I should keep the old pioneer pro (that didn't work anymore)? Are any of the parts similar to the 316?

    Thanks again for your advice!
