ReadyNAS 4200 - can't access Boot Menu

Recently acquired a ReadyNAS 4200. I believe it's version 1. 12 bay SATA connections.

It wouldn't boot when turning it on. I would just get a blank black screen w/ blinking cursor.

I've read to use a paperclip and while it's turned off, to press the reset and keep holding while powering it on. I've waited for lights to come on and nothing ever did.

After just trial and failure I decided to see what was on the internal flash drive and it was blank. I then downloaded the RAIDiator x86 4.2.30 and extracted it to a exFat flash drive.

Now when booting I get a message of No OS found.

I've tried again w/ holding in reset and get the top two lights illuminated but that doesn't do anything either.

I've tried all of this with the drives in and with them all out. Nothing works...

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • The ReadyNAS can't read ExFAT.  The intenal flash drive continas more than just the same inage as youan download.  What you need is a USB recovery to re-write the internalflash from an external one.  But how you get there when you can't access the boot menu, I'm not sure.  An OS6 machine will just do it automatically, but I don't think a 4.2.x machine will, though you could try it.

Thank you. I'll try sticking the original flash drive in as I didn't alter that, and see what it does. When I initially had it in, that's when I would get the blank screen w/ the blinking cursor.

If the internal flash drive arrived blank one wonders if the previous owner wiped it (pretty pointless as there's no personal info on the internal USB).

I'm kinda guessing that it's blank. I tried viewing the flash drive in my windows machine and there was nothing there. I also tried viewing through software that can view linux files, thinking that maybe that was the reason that I couldn't view on windows, and there was nothing. But I will say, now that I've put that flash drive back in the internal USB port, it just boots back to a blinking cursor.

I just find it odd that I can't access the boot menu, by holding down the reset button. I never see the bottom lights illuminate.

Do you have at least one drive installed?  I'm not sure if you can get to the boot menu without one.

Can you get to the BIOS menu?  That would help verify that the hardware is working correctly.
