- MD0MDIAspirantOK, before many users tell me to see the recommendation list of HDD's, I already have, and we ordered some Seagate ST2000DL003 Hard Drives, only to find they are NOT compatible with the NV+ RAID due to the ' FLUSH CACHE EXT" hang problem on the drive', and sure enough we had a nightmare getting this to even see the drives, so these have now been returned, but I need a good recommendation that will work! Seagate being my prefered supplier just agreed that the ST2000DL003 is not suitable for a RAID drive, but they cannot / will not recommend me an alternitive, except to state that No drive with the 'ECO' label attached to it should be used in a RAID!
Can ANYONE please recommend me a drive that I can purchase from AMAZON that will work, but please not Western Digital, I have had 8 of these fail in 12 new PC's that we purchased just 9 months ago, so we have now swapped out the others just in case they fail to, so I have no confidence in that manufacturer!
Any other suggestions??? This is getting very URGENT now! - tcdmailAspirant+1

I see that one of you has already tried the new Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB (WD30EZRX) drive. The only thing that differs - as I've read - from the preavious EZRS model is the 6Gb Sata capability of the drive.
What is more important, is that is STILL not on the compatibility list of my NVX. Now perhaps we could have some official information on that, since I understand that a new firmware that the drive must have could bring complications, and since the only drive on the compatibility list is now obsolete and not for sale any more (that's actually pretty stinky Netgear...), we NEED an update.
There are other alternatives, but they are either Segate or very pricey. The WD drive is available and could do the job, if only we could have official confirmation that it IS compatible.
Thanks.

Thanks. - mkushAspirantHello. I have an Ultra 6+ on order, arriving tomorrow. I plan to populate it with Hitachi 7K3000 drives, four of which I already had and two of which I just ordered from someone on eBay. The part number of all the drives is 0F12450, while the model number is HDS723030ALA640. My concern is matching the firmware on the drives. Since two of them are much newer than the other four, I presume I will have a mismatch. Whether or not that actually matters is, I'm sure, a matter for debate. But I'd definitely feel better with a matching set.
So my question is, does NetGear (or any reader) have a recommendation on whether one particular firmware revision of that drive is preferred? Hitachi support suggested that I ask that question. My old drives have firmware 390 (also known as MRK390). New drives are still unknown. Thanks! - swsellersAspirantI am a new owner of a Ultra 4+ and I have been unable to find 3TB drives that are on this HCL. I had the same question as Jason386 and it would be helpful to have this updated on the list if it is supported. I would also like to know if the Seagate Barracuda 7200 3 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST3000DM001 should be on the Ultra 4+ list. This drive is on the NVX list but not the Ultra. I read out here that the Green drives have problems at times...but this drive is not Green. With the drive shortages, it is important that the HCL be updated and current as I agree with several postings that the HCL is behind.
- Jason386AspirantHi All,
Starting State
ReadyNAS Ultra 4 with 4x1TB Hitachi HDS721010CLA332, X-RAID2
HCL info on non-listed 3TB drive.
Went looking for a 3TB, found a western digital on the HCL WD30EZRS
found a store that had them, went in and they were actually WD30EZRX
I explained the situation that the disks needed to be a specific model.
The WD30EZRS is supposedly discontinued, replaced by the WD30EZRX model.
The guy said I could try them, and return them if they didn't work, so ...hey, gave 'em a try.
powered off, swapped disk1 out for the first 3TB.... the RAID re-synced showing 927 GB allocated.
powered off, swapped disk2 out for the second 3TB.... the RAID re-synced showing 927 GB allocated.
Then got messages saying that expansion has been identified or something like that and that volume would be expanded upon next reboot.
So...rebooted....volume expanding
so far so good!
Current State

Is it a drive limit, or a partition limit? In other words, if I split a 3TB drive into 2TB + 1TB partitions, would it work?
I want to use a single HD to backup my ReadyNAS Duo with 1.5TB capacity (2x1.5TB RAID 1) and data from my main computer (ca. 1 TB), so splitting into two partitions is not an issue.
Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1. Limit still applies to USB drives too. There is no GPT support at all on Sparc ReadyNAS.
2. It's probably a software limit. However considering the significant obstacles to adding GPT support I would say that the chances of GPT support being added would be pretty much nil. The Sparc line though still supported by firmware updates (4.1.9 is in beta) is discontinued. 3rd party development for Sparc stopped long ago. This means that development has become increasingly difficult for Sparc. NetGear still backports updates to software such as netatalk, rsync to get it working on Sparc. The amount of work required to attempt to bring GPT to Sparc with a fair chance of finding it doesn't even work would be huge. Look at how long it was between RAIDiator 4.1.6 and 4.1.7. I think that was largely due to work on getting 4k sector partition alignment working on Sparc. - ReadyNASUserAspirant

2 TB is the limit for V1 (sparc-based products).AndrewL1963 wrote: Have anyone had any luck with 3TB drives in the NV+ V1? Already using 4 x 1.5TB but space now at a premium. Over the last 6 years have gone from 750 to 1TB to 1.5TB so would like to save some time and money and jump straight to the 3TB.
1. Does that limit also apply to external USB drives? i.e. if I have 4 x 1TB installed in NV+, giving approx 2.8Gb usable, and I need to backup to a USB drive I need a 3Gb disk... with it work on an NV+?
2. For drives in a NV+ X-RAID array is 2Gb a hardware limit or a software limit? (i.e. any likelihood the limit can or will be removed)

OK I have my answer to 1. its no unfortunately... so if you put in 4x 1TB or 1.5TB drives you can't back them up to a single USB drive - disappointing - http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=46175#p299584
Whats the answer to #2?
