Readynas Duo Failing, Should I Pull Disks?
Hey Everyone
Yesterday my Readynas Duo disconnected from the network and refused to shut down, not from the command prompt or by holding the button down, and I couldn't access the front end. I had to pull the power plug, and when I plugged it back in it worked for a while and then the same thing happened again. This time I checked the error logs and starting about a week ago I was getting the error
and then
I turned the duo off, pulled disk 1 out and plugged it via sata into my computer. Unfortunately,Windows disk management is reading it as completely blank and I can't even assign it a letter.
So, sorry for the long run up but here are my questions: Firstly, is disk 1 the one on the left (closest to the power button)? If so, does the fact that my computer is detecting it as empty the imply that it's dead and should be replaced? Or am I just not connecting it properly?
Secondly, and more importantly, I've started copying the data from disk 2 to my computer via windows explorer, but every now and again it seems to trip up, saying that it can't find a folder even though it exists. I have to click skip and then copy the affected files across once the current operation is done.
Is my Duo busted? Is disk 2 also busted? Should I pull disk 2 out of my the duo and connect it to my pc and copy the data across that way?
I've been backing up data fairly regularly so it's not the end of the world if I lose both disks, but it would still be annoying...
But basically, right now it seems like I've lost disc 1, I don't wanna lose disc 2, what's the best way to proceed? Leave disk 2 in the nas? Connect it directly to the computer via Sata?
Sorry for such a long post, any and all info appreciated. I'm running the 4.1.6 firmware if that helps. Thanks in advance,

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI don't think your NAS is broken, it appears to me like a disk failure.
However, Windows can't read the NAS drives. The disks are formatted as ext, which is not a file format that Windows understands. If you reformat so Windows sees it, then you will absolutely destroy the data.
Try downloading Acronis drive monitor (or a similar freeware tools which displays SMART stats) onto your PC, and look for reallocated sectors and pending sectors. Those tools will see the disk (but won't read the data). If you see other errors, maybe post them here.
Log into Frontview, and read the SMART stats for disk 2. SMART stats can be seen by clicking on the SMART+ button on drive health.
Don't reinsert drive 1 at this point, as that will start a resync process in the NAS. Also, don't try to reboot it.
I'd try to complete the data copy (to give you another recovery option to your backups). Though if you are ok with cmd line tools, you should use robocopy instead of windows explorer. There is a gui (google for it).
After that, you could try inserting a good drive into slot one (with the NAS running). Or start over with a factory reset, and rebuild everything (config, add-ons, and data). - agentredAspirantThanks for the prompt response, the ext file structure explains a lot.
The SMART status for Disk2 seems fine but that doesn't explain why some files aren't copying... I'll try robocopy and that might help.
I'll keep the drive in the duo for now. I also have a spare disk, will use that in the disk 1 slot, thanks again for your help.
For future reference though, I'm thinking of just using RAID 1 instead of X-Raid so that if this ever happens again I won't have to deal with ext.... - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserRAID-1 would also use ext for the file system - All ReadyNAS products use ext for all internal drives, no matter what RAID format is used.

Weird thing's happening though, there's one song on the nas disks that is no longer being recognized by any of my music players. When I try to copy it to an external hard drive, it gives me an error about not being found, and if there's another file transfer going on it stalls and I have to cancel the song transfer then click try again on the other transfer for it to continue.
At this point I'm just gonna order two new drives and a synology and start from scratch with a recent backup, there's a little too much weirdness with data going on and I can't risk corruption on the files...
