ReadyNAS DUO problems with WD

I have a ReadyNas DOU which I have problems with.
The NAS have been working fine for several years.
One day one disk failed and I decided to change both so I bought two WD Caviar Green 2 GB (WDC WD20EARX-00PASB0) with 51.0AB51.
The disk is on the HDC list.
Both disks were checked with WD tool - no problems were found in the extended test.

- I did a factory reset and installed Radiator 4.1.8.
- I added some data on a volume
. When I ran the NAS with just one disk there was no problem.

When I inserted the second the problems begun.
The first synch was ok but now the problem is that I get a lot of the messages:
'"A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime."

The "sata reset" event usually happens when I copy lots of data to it (using windows/CIFS) from my backup.

There are no errors in smart+ information.

As soon as one of the "sata resets" has ocurred the NAS WILL perform a synch on next restart which takes many hours to perform.
Unfortunately many times during synch Frontview is down and shares cannot be reached which is a major problem.

After synch is complete (I get an e-mail) it still does not answer (shares or Frontview). However a a soft shutdown is possible, and upon start it starts synching again!

What am I missing here?
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

  • I found this in the dmesg.log:

    EXT3-fs error (device dm-0): htree_dirblock_to_tree: bad entry in directory #24018978: rec_len is smaller than minimal - offset=0, inode=0, rec_len=0, name_len=0

Not really sure if it is hardware or simply file system problem.

    Any ideas?
Should I reset the NAS all over again? Guess I have not any other option...
  • A factory reset is one solution - IF you have all the data also on another device or combination of devices. It is also, most likely the quickest solution.

The other solution would be to open an online tech support request. That, however, would involve waiting for the questions they would have and the instructions to set the device up for telenet so they can access it remotely and see the details of what is going on. While this would take longer, it may be more helpful in possibly determining what went wrong.

This is one reason we harp on backups so much - they give you more options.
  • I have backup for my data so its not a problem.

The factory reset did not solve the problem.
After a large amount of data has been copied to it; a sata reset is perfromed again.
    Volume scan finds no problems.

I am beginning to wonder if the actual readynas has some kind of HW-problem.
  • I would open an on line Tech Support request. Once you have the case number, edit your first post and append the case number to the subject line. When you open your case, reference this discussion.
