ReadyNas NetGear failing and needing a reboot
We order countless readynas backup devices and ship them out to our customers. They fail so often that we have created a script to E-mail us when they fail. We then have to call our customer and reboot the device. This takes a lot of time out of our daily routine to do this. There has to be a logical reason why they're failing and need a reboot. I would like to solve this problem. Can anyone suggest where I might start my investigation?
If there is anymore information, I can provide please let me know.
Thanks.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhich Readynas devices, and what firmware are they running?
Have you contacted support? - jtaylor1AspirantWe're using the ReadyNAS 312 which is being shipped to our new customers, we also have Ultra, and DUOs that have been in the field for 3 years now and counting.
Do you think that possibly if we're using old firmware that could cause them to need to be rebooted? After we reboot them, they comeback online, and we're able to ping them and start a new backup.
What we do is build the device update it with the new firmware and then to be perfectly honest we forget about updating the firmware from then on. Other than going back and updating the firmware, is there any other possible causes that you can think of?
Thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOn the older NAS (duos in particular) it could be a filling OS partition. The duo's OS partition is 2 GB, the ultra and 312 have 4 gb.
Approximately how long do they run before you reboot them? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf the problem is a full OS partition you should configure email scripts that alert you to the issue so you can deal with the problem proactively before it becomes a problem.
e.g. an email with output from
# cat /var/log/raidiator_version
# df -h
# df -i
Could configure a script to only send it if the usage is over a certain level. Then look into the system, find out why it is getting so full and take steps to reduce the likelihood of that happening again. While you are it update the firmware on the box if it is out of date. - xeltrosApprenticeIf you have that many NAS to fail, then would seek those who don't and search for differences from there.
Otherwise than that, can you be more specific on how often they fail, how hot they are, are their IP addresses fixed or DHCP... - jtaylor1AspirantFirst off, I just wanted to say thanks. I am truly surprised with the amount of responses and helpful suggestions.
My plan of action, is to find a backupmate device that we reboot almost everyday and update the firmware on it. Then see if that lowers the frequency of the backupmate needing to be rebooted. As you can possibly imagine calling our customers and having them reboot the device is a hindrance which I would like to avoid.
I will keep everyone posted.

This backup device fails very frequent. The firmware is on the latest version. For me to get the back up device working again I simply have them reboot the device. The problem is temporarily fixed until it fails again.
Any suggestions?

Can you send me your logs?: http://readynas.com/kb/faq/misc/how_do_i_send_all_logs - jtaylor1AspirantI will have the logs for you on Monday.
