ReadyNAS NV+ does not turn on - HELP!
Hello there,
I have a ReadyNAS NV+ and it has been working fine for yeas but we had the power turned off at our place the other day for some electrical work and when the power was turned back on the NAS would not turn on. I was extra careful and made sure the NAS was turned off before the power to the house was turned off.
I suspect the power supply has taken a hit (even though it was was plugged into a UPS which should have filtered any surges). I have tried plugging the NAS into another power outlet and changed power leads but it will not turn on.
My question is what next? My thoughts were to fault find / replace the PSU but if that does not work do I have any options of buying an alternate Netgear NAS that will allow me to simply transfer the SATA drives across and carry on? From memory they were in a RAID5 configuration.
I did have an external USB plugged into the NAS so luckily I have a backup of all of our photos but there are some other important documents sitting on the NAS that unfortunately were not backed up and I can no longer access
Any help or assitance much appreciated!
James

I'm guessing this is the first generation NV+ (which runs 4.1.x firmware). There is a second generation (which runs 5.3.x firmware). They are completely different platforms, so it is important to be very clear on what you have.
The second generation says "NV+ v2" on the front panel; the first generation just says "NV+". People get confused if they look at other labels (many first generation NV+ say v2 or v3 on other labels on the back).
Also, the first generation NV+ has an internal PSU, the second generation uses an external power adapter.

That can be done. However, in the case of the first generation NAS, you do need to modify the pinout a bit. We can provide a diagram if you need one.
Though you might be better off getting a new NAS. The first generation NV+ went out of production in 2011, and it is a very old design.

You could try to find another used first gen NV+, and either grab its PSU, or move your disks directly to it. Of course it will be very old too. If you do that, power it up with a temporary disk (which will be reformatted). Then confirm that it works, and also update the firmware to the current version (or at least match what you were running before). Then power down, and migrate your disks (preserving slot order).
Other options include:
- Using an inexpensive ATX supply temporarily. That won't fit into the NAS, so you'd use an extension cable to power it. You'd make the pinout modification in the cable. That will let you offload the rest of the data.
- Connect the drives to a PC (either sata, or usb adapter/docks), so you can offload data. R-Studio software ( https://www.r-studio.com/ ) can be used for this - but make sure you get a version that includes RAID support and the ext file system. There is a free way to mount the drives in a linux PC.
- Purchase a new ReadyNAS, and work with Netgear paid support. They can temporarily mount your disks in the new NAS, so you can offload your data. I believe they will charge (likely similar in cost to R-studio, but less than R-studio + the adapter/docks). https://kb.netgear.com/29876/ReadyNAS-Migrating-disks-from-RAIDiator-4-1-or-RAIDiator-5-3-to-ReadyNAS-OS-6
- jimbo6001AspirantMany thanks for the detailed response. I'll troubleshoot the PSU initially to see if I can get the NAS up and running again to get the data off and then an upgrade could be in order!
- jimbo6001AspirantWith regard to a replacement PSU, this would just be a straight swap over with another NV+ compatible unit wouldn't it? (You mentioned modifying the pin out?). Could you send me the cable / pin-out details for the external ATX power supply option as well? Thanks for your help, James

Thanks for your help, JamesThe pinout is attached - the cable details would be the same for an external ATX. There are some mini-ITX, (also called flex ATX) supplies out there that might fit, but they would also need the mod.
Of course if you are taking the PSU from another NV+ (or purchase one that is pre-modified) there would be no modification needed.

Hi again,
I tired following the PSU removal instructions (attached) which I found on this forum and I am able to remove the side panels and the fan but for the life of me I cannot remove the PSU and chassis! I have removed all screws as per the instructions but the PSU chassis will not slide out - Can anyone advise if I am doing anytning obvious or there is an additional step I need to action?
Thanks for the continued assistance.
James

Did you forget the screw under the tamper-proof seal? I have an NV+ V1 sitting right here with the supply removed, and the instructions cover everything.
BTW, the supply for a Pro4, Ultra4, or NVX will also work, though you can probably buy a used NV+ cheaper.
