ReadyNas Ultra 4 Plus discontinued?

Hi Guys,

I've been using my NV+ (v1) for a few years now and was thinking that it may be time to upgrade.

I've started doing my research and decided that Ultra 4 Plus (RNDP400U-100NAS) is probably the best choice. Then I started looking around for places that sell them and I can't find anyone in the UK that has them in stock, not even Amazon (see: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-ReadyNA ... B004AM61Y8), interestingly all the places I looked at had the older Ultra 4 (single core) in stock.

Am I readying this wrong? I would expect places to indicate that they had no stock currently but that more was arriving soon, but that's not what I'm seeing (see: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/netw ... 00eus.html)

Thoughts?

The Pro 4 (RNDP4000) has the Ultra/Ultra Plus feature set + business features and has a 5 year warranty vs the 3 years on the Ultra/Ultra Plus. You may wish to consider getting the Pro 4.
  • It may be a batch run thing. It seems to me that the production run is in batches, so the last batch may not have been enough to cover the demand for the Ultra 4 + in the European market. If you are looking in a physical store versus on line, you may want to try online.

But, considering the price difference, the Pro 4 is a very good option. The additional 2 year warranty is IMO worth the difference. While I cannot speak to the UK, in the US it is 7 to 8 percent ($40 to $50).
  • While I agree that it could just be that they have a disruption in the supply chain it is curious that every respectable eRetailer I looked at in the UK has it either marked as Discontinued or Out of Stock with no estimated resupply date.

Another thing that's also curious is that it's the same story for Ultra 2 Plus (as someone else already posted on this board) and I find it hard to believe that they suddenly have issues with both of these models.

To be honest it looks to me like they're doing the Apple thing (waiting until all the old stock is sold before announcing the replacement product), but only time will tell.

BTW, I am not interested in the extra "business" features offered by the Pro series and the price difference (in the UK) is significant - Ultra 4 Plus around £450, Pro 4 around £550. The annoying thing is that this state is pushing me to look at alternatives, i.e. other vendors even though I've been a happy ReadyNAS customer and I want to give them more business...
  • I can't see Netgear discontinuing the Ultra 4 Plus line but keeping the Ultra 4, that sounds totally unrealistic to me. I have the Ultra 4 (base model) and it's a significant step up from the Sparc Models in it's own right.

If you have a NV+ now I don't see the sudden urgency to upgrade *now*. Give it a few months and see what transpires, or get the Ultra 4. I only see the Plus model as being beneficial (for the extra cost) if your going to be running a lot of CPU intensive apps on it, say like PLEX for example.

I have a dozen add-ons running on my Ultra, and it hardly breaks a sweat. I did upgrade the RAM in it, but so far it's been one of the best purchases I've ever made. You also have to factor into the bargain the knowledge that moving to a new vendor means learning a completely new way of doing things. You already "know" how to administer the NV+ i'm assuming, so the Ultra wouldn't be that much different, and you'd have the NAS-to-NAS backup functionality in Replicate you also wouldn't get with a different brand.

Your money, your choice, but I know what I'd do.

    :)
