sizing 516 volume/raid choice

Since the os6 seems to have stabilized I am shopping for a 516.
I have a couple of questions about volume /raid configurations.
If I go with a raid 6 will I have the capacity of 3 drives for volumes?
That is to say if I used 6 1tb drives I would have 3tb available raid 6 or is that wrong?

Also if I choose that type of raid, I loose the expansion capabilities of x-raid, right?

Just trying to balance available volume size with fault tolerance and cost. And yes, I do back up in addition.

  • Raid 6 needs at least 4 disks as 2 are for redundancy.
Six 1tb drives would give you a volume of about 3.7 tb, it's not quite 1tb per disk.

Xraid is expandable. Horizontally if you have an available slot and vertically if you have bigger disks to put in.
Note that with raid 6 you'd need to upgrade 4 disks to expand the volume.
  • Personally I would go with 4 2TB drives (or larger). With RAID-6, you'd get the same space for about the same cost. Plus you have two open slots for future expansion. It's always cheaper to expand by popping a new disk into an empty slot.
  • Well we shall see.
Newegg has the diskless 516 on sale.
That and 6 2tb drives are on their way to me.
Fun with raid and migration shall begin.

Put one disk in NAS, update to 6.1.6, verify update completed successfully, power down, put all disks in and do a factory default.

To use RAID-6 you will need to disable X-RAID, delete the volume, create a new RAID-6 volume and if you want you can then turn X-RAID back on.
  • So far pretty painless.
I have the raid 6 configured and rebuilt.
I just have to re-select x-raid to re-enable volume expansion now and into the future?
