Spare hot-plug disk trays?
The spare hot plug trays for the NV+ seem to have been discontinued. What's going on with this? I need to buy some.
Thanks

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat do you need them for?
- mn1247AspirantI don't want to have to unscrew the disk every time I need to swap.
Are these no longer available? Is there a substitute?
Eric - PapaBear1ApprenticeThey have probably gone to the ones with the square recessed release that came out with the NVX. They are on all the new production units for some time.
Checking the Netgear Store, they seem to be in stock for $24.99.
Of course if you are going to put a drive into the ReadyNAS only for a short period, you can also use only two screws in opposite corners. This was a trick posted by one of the Jedi as they do this when evaluating hard drives for the HCL. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredBut how often do you really need to swap disks? It shouldn't be very often at all unless you manage a large number of units. If you replace a disk then the replaced disk should be a failing/dead disk or a low capacity disk no longer intended to be used. RAID is not a backup (see Preventing Catastrophic Data Loss). Important data primarily stored on the ReadyNAS should be backed up regularly (e.g. to a USB disk, another NAS or some place else).

Do the new square-recessed ones fit into the NV+ or DUO? Given the jamming issues with the old design, it would be very nice if they did.PapaBear wrote: They have probably gone to the ones with the square recessed release that came out with the NVX. The old design tray hasn't been in production for quite a while now, I think,
- PapaBear1ApprenticeI believe the older button style has been totally replaced. Of course there could be a number of units still in the supply chain with them still installed.
- pdizazzoAspirantIs this the same part number for the ReadyNas 1500? We just bought one and we rotate the whole set of drives offsite each week in case catastrophic failure. We just use it for backups of all of our other servers.

No. Rackmount units use a different style tray to desktop units.
SATA connectors are designed for a limited number of pulls and handling drives bare you risk damaging them without realising it. I would suggest you review your backup strategy and choose a better method. - sphardy1Apprentice

That may not hold for the rack mount units
For the consumer desktop units where cost is key and disk changes are expected to be infrequent, it would not seem unreasonable that Netgear chose a lower spec'ed backplane connector - and IIRC there is a comment on the forums from Netgear to that effect. But for the Rack mounted units which are primarily business units, then a different design decision may have been applied.
It would be useful/interesting to know if the rack mount and desktop units share the same backplane connector? The different tray design between the 2 would suggest some change in design criteria
