Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM working good so far
There was a recent deal at NewEgg on the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB drives, so I decided to risk it as opposed to the other WD & Seagate 2tb drives. I installed them, upgraded the ReadyNAS firmware then did a factory reset. Disk 4 took most of an evening to resync, but finally finished. So far it's been running fine as I've been copying data off my old NV+ on to the new Ultra 4.
The Ultra 4 is sitting in the bottom of my gun safe, so low heat is rather important to me and I thought a 5400 would be a better bet. So far I haven't seen any Temp1 above 140f or so and the HD's are usually at or under 100f, never seen one above 108f. I was worrried that the enclosed fireproof safe would end up retaining too much heat, but it's been 3 days now with no problems. When I have the safe open the drives are very quiet, not surprisingly closed you can't hear a thing at all.
Will try and post later when I see how they hold up.

- Mutley1AspirantHi airs
I just had a quick look, and managed to follow the instruction except last part.Once the computer booted, it dropped me at a C:\> command prompt and I just executed the Samsung exe.
Silly question, but how to execute the .exe from command prompt? What's the key sequence, or just hit return....I've no idea?
And thanks for the guide.

Just type the name of the executable and hit return to run it. Make sure you've copied it to the root of the usb stick first. If you need to double check it's name, type "dir" (w/o quotes) at the prompt for a list of files. If there are too many files, type "dir |more" and it will paginate. The "|" character is a shifted back slash key.

When I get time I'll start this little project. Let us know how you get on with it, if you're doing it in the next little while.
mutley - airsAspirantFYI, the fix installed on all of my HD204UI and I was able to put them back in the readynas without losing data.
One thing of note is that the fix failed twice with an unknown error. When this happened, I shut down the computer and changed to a different SATA port/cable, which worked. - soulseekerAspiranti can't figure out for sure what really causes the problem but I tried the following:
1. I copied a large file on the nas
2. During the copy-job I opened frontview and in "status" I opened the smart tab several times so that the nas does a smart query on both discs. And nothing happened to the file copied. So currently I think the fix is pretty useless for readynas users.
Maybe it just let's us sleep better ;). - eco001Aspirant

Maybe it just let's us sleep better ;).* This warning also applies to other tools which use IDENTIFY DEVICE to obtain drive information. The problem is not SMART related.
So it looks like the specific command is IDENTIFY_DEVICE - I'm not sure when (or if) the Readynas would issue it. Did you compare the MD5 of your test files after the copy? - Mutley1AspirantAnother question regarding patch procedure
Once the computer booted, it dropped me at a C:\> command prompt and I just executed the Samsung exe.
If I'm attaching disk via dock/caddy to laptop with XP, would it still be 'C:\' or be whatever xp gives hard drive i.e. "J:\" and then "filename.exe"? So I'd have to change prefix from "C:\" to "J:\"?
Or it don't matter, patch will find it's way to Samsung hard drive?

Did you compare the MD5 of your test files after the copy?
no, but it was a mkv-movie that I watched afterwards without problems. - airsAspirantNot sure if you'll be able to detect a file error that way. An MD5 comparison will tell you for sure though!
