Storage Calc RN104
I'm migrating all my drives from one RN104 to another RN104 due to having to RMA the unit. Since the drives were all installed when the original unit cal with OS 6.0.0, I want to do a factory reset when moving them to the new unit to take advantage of the larger block size. Anyway,I currently have (3) 4tb + (1) 3tb disks. I though about swapping out the 3TB for another 4TB to go from 10TB to 11TB (with X-Raid / Raid 5). Looking online, I can get a 5TB for only $30 more. The ReadyNAS RAID Calculator doesn't have 5 or 6TB drives, so not sure if adding one of these does any good. I believe I need at least 2 of the 4 to be 5TB (or 6TB) to see any storage benefit. But for future expandability, if any of the other 4TB drives need to be replaced in the future, at least I already would have one 5TB installed.
Any problems with the 16TB expandability limit? Or is that gone with doing a factory reset? Is the 16TB total space, or space available after the RAID redundancy?

Use this volume calculator:

On the 104 there is a 16Tib volume size limit.
...and you would get volume expansion with the upgrade of the 3tb to 4 or 5tb disk. If you used a 5 TB then you would get further expansion if you replaced on of the 4 tb disks with a 5 tb disk. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAiming towards 3x6TB+1x4TB is also viable, and requires replacing 3 drives over time instead of all four.
At current pricing, three 6 TB drives are slightly cheaper ($30) than four 5 TB drives, and you end up with 1 TB more capacity. - vandermerweMasterIf Netgear would just get their act together and get some 5 and 6 Tb drives on the hcl for the 104!
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWe can't add 5TB or 6TB drives to the list due to the volume capacity limit.

Seems to me it could be done with note.mdgm wrote: We can't add 5TB or 6TB drives to the list due to the volume capacity limit.
Also, 4x5TB xraid stays below the volume limit. - vandermerweMasterEdit: Echo what StephenB has said:
5 TB drives are ok in Xraid, ie below 16, and there are other flexraid configurations of 5 and 6 TB disks that are within the limit.
Why not just qualify the entry in the HCL, explaining that they may be used in some configurations. Users clearly have a desire to use them. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell 4x5TB in a spanned RAID-0 is above the limit.
Some users choose to ignore notes we put on the compatibility list. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Frankly most users don't even know the compatibility list exists.mdgm wrote: Well 4x5TB in a spanned RAID-0 is above the limit.

These disks work, and you can't actually get to the 16 TiB volume limit unless you use disks > 4 TB. I think its wrong for Netgear to deny support on the RN100 when these drives are appropriately used. And that's what happens if they aren't on the HCL. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredA link to the list is specifically mentioned in the hardware manual and in the installation guide.
If you are looking to use 6TB disks you really should consider the 200 series and up.
The volume capacity limitation is one reason 6TB disks are not on the compatibility list for the 100 series. There may be others. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
We'll need to agree to disagree.mdgm wrote: A link to the list is specifically mentioned in the hardware manual and in the installation guide.
