ULTRA2: USB 3.0 HDD only works on USB2.0 port and not USB3.0
Hi,
very curious thing!
I just bought an ReadyNAS Ultra2. I bought it specifically for the USB 3.0 port, because the ultra2 is the only model with 1 USB 3.0 port on the frontside.
However, I have the following issue:
-my IOmega Blackbelt 1Tb USB 3.0 HDD is only recognized on the USB 2.0 ports on the back and not recognized in the USB 3.0 front port
As a result, I can not make fast backups to the USB 3.0 HDD, but only via USB 2.0.... :(
I have tested other USB 2.0 HDD and USB 2.0 flash and these all work (Western Digital passport 500 Gb and Kingston flashdrive).
Is this a hardware issue or a firmware issue?
Any suggestions?

Hi,
thanks for the support!
I have RAIDiator 4.2.16 and the IOmega Blackbelt USB 3.0 does not have its own power supply. A splitcable did come with the drive. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt could be that your drive requires too much power. Connecting it to a power supply or to a USB 3.0 hub with a power supply would be worth trying.

Maybe. But why does the USB 3.0 HDD work on the USB ports on the back of the ultra2? - boezeroenAspirantits getting even worse.
When I connect the IOmega blackbelt USB 3.0 to the front of the ultra2 and then power on, the readynas will not boot completely and wont work properly.
My RAIDAR application shows the message "TFTP req".
Does anyone has experience with a working USB 3.0 HDD on the fron USB port (and is gettin usb 3.0 speed).
Anyone???
 - PapaBear1ApprenticeIt sounds to me as if the Iomega drive is pulling too much power from the USB port. Remember that when booting a device, it takes more power than when it is running.
If you cannot connect an external power supply to the Iomega drive, then the suggestion previously suggested of using a USB 3.0 hub with it's own power supply would be a good idea. Here is an example.
A good clue to the high power draw is the fact that the drive comes with a "Y" adapter cable whose only purpose is to split the power draw between two USB ports. Unfortunately, the total power draw is still the same. From the dimensions of the drive, it sounds as if it has a 3 1/2 drive inside rather than the low power draw 2 1/2 drive or even lower power draw SSD. These drives many times do not even work on USB 2.0 if your plug both legs into the front ports of a PC, because both ports are connected to the same controller, so do not have enough power. All of my USB connected 3 1/2 drives have their own power supply.
An external SATA drive enclosure with USB 3.0 connection and it's own AC Adapter would have been a better choice. Newegg has 14 such enclosures priced between $20 and $50. Or a USB 3.0 drive with it's own AC adapter. - boezeroenAspirantHi papabear,
the Iomega blackbelt contains a 2.5" harddisk and not a 3.5".
Thanks for the suggestion of connecting it to a USB 3.0 hub. Unfortunately is did not work.
Does my readynas really support USB 3.0 HDD's in the frontport or is the USB 3.0 frontport on my readynas useless? - PapaBear1ApprenticeSince I don't have an Ultra/Pro 2 I can't give any knowledge either way.
My impression of the drive size was based on the specifications I found for the drive which are approximately 4"x6"x2" which is a very large enclosure for a 2 1/2 drive. My WD passports are 3"x5"x1/2". - boezeroenAspirant

Thanks papabear for your comments!
So, for now the question is: which USB 3.0 HDD will work on USB 3.0 speed on the USB 3.0 frontport of my ReadyNAS Ultra2?
Anyone? - Lynne1AspirantWhat firmware are you running on your NAS?
I don't know what firmware my Pro2 came with (its only a week old), but I successfully backed it up via the front USB 3.0 port to an IOmega Blackbelt USB 3.0 drive.
Then I upgraded the firmware on my readyNAS to Version: 4.2.17.
Now the NAS won't even find the Blackbelt no matter which USB port I plug it into.
