ULTRA2: USB 3.0 HDD only works on USB2.0 port and not USB3.0
Hi,
very curious thing!
I just bought an ReadyNAS Ultra2. I bought it specifically for the USB 3.0 port, because the ultra2 is the only model with 1 USB 3.0 port on the frontside.
However, I have the following issue:
-my IOmega Blackbelt 1Tb USB 3.0 HDD is only recognized on the USB 2.0 ports on the back and not recognized in the USB 3.0 front port
As a result, I can not make fast backups to the USB 3.0 HDD, but only via USB 2.0.... :(
I have tested other USB 2.0 HDD and USB 2.0 flash and these all work (Western Digital passport 500 Gb and Kingston flashdrive).
Is this a hardware issue or a firmware issue?
Any suggestions?

- boezeroenAspirantI was running 4.2.16, now I am running 4.2.17.
In both cases, the iomega blackbelt is NOT recognized when its plugged into the front port. Only the 2 backports recognize the iomega blackbelts at usb2.0 speed. - kottongAspirantHello
I own a ultra 2 since 5 days and have the same problem as the member 'bozeroen'.
When I plug the external 2TB Popstar USB3 device into the USB3 port the ultra2 did not boot.
When I switch off the external USB3 HD and power on the NAS it boot fine and when I then switch on
then USB3 HD it works well.
Any suggestions?
kottong - boezeroenAspirantat last... after upgrading to 4.2.19, my USB 3.0 HDD now works on the front USB 3.0 port of my Ultra2.
However.... speed results of the usb 3.0 frontport are really disappointing.... no faster than the regular usb 2.0 ports.... - Mr_BGuideAs you have failed to name the performance figures, we simply cant have any idea as to what, if anything is the cause. But you might simply have run in to performance issues with the NAS it self. What drives do you have in it, how is it configured?
B! - PapagaiouAspirantI also have a Seagate USB 3 powered by its own adapter. The Ultra 2 won't boot when it is connected. However when plug in the back it boots without a problem.
- bosjtAspirantI am having this problem also. I have just purchased a StarTech SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to 3.5" SATA Enclosure and it comes with an external power supply. I put a WD Green 2TB drive in it (same drive as in my ReadyNas Ultra 2Plus and tested it with my USB 3.0 port on a Windows 7 box (works fine). I took it downstairs and plugged it into the front USB port on the ReadyNas and powered it on. The green status light comes on the front of the ReadyNas and then blinks a few times. I waited 30 seconds and pressed the Backup button. The USB enclosure blue status light flashes indicating, I think, that the drive is being accessed. Then I get an email from the ReadyNas that that the backup has been aborted because the USB drive can't be found.
I'm running Firmware 4.2.22... Any Ideas? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you download the logs, what is the date in bios_ver.log ?
- bosjtAspirantthe bios_ver.log says: 09/08/2010 ReadyNAS-ProUltra2 V1.4
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere is a newer BIOS for it: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=387035#p387035
- bosjtAspirantI installed the new BIOS (it was really easy... downloaded the BIOS file and then installed it via the FrontView Add-in menu). Then I upgraded Radiator firmware to the latest. Next I swapped out the failing WD20EARS Green drive with a WD20EFRX Red drive and waited for the 8.5 hour Mirror to rebuild. That completed and so I put another WD20EARS Green drive into the USB3 enclosure, did a quick format from Windows, and then took it down into the basement. Plugged in the USB3 enclosure power supply and turned it on. Waited 20 seconds and then plugged the USB cable into the front USB3 port of my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus. Waited 20 seconds for the green light to come on above the ReadyNAS USB3 port and pressed the Backup button once. But I get the same problem... ReadyNAS says "The destination for this backup job is a USB device that is currently not connected. If it is attached, please try removing and reattaching the device. [Job 001]"
Could the USB3 port be bad? It's way late to warranty it. I'm not sure I ever used this port because once a while back I tried and got the error and didn't try again. Took my offsite backup over the network from my PC's USB3 port.
UPDATE: It seems the Backup button was programmed incorrectly by my... anyway, I went into FrontView > Backup and reconfigured the Backup 001 Job to do the whole ReadyNAS C drive Volume (is this the best way to do a full backup?) and then set the destination to the Front USB Port and saved it. Then I pressed the front USB Button and this time the backup seems to be working. So maybe all along I had just messed up the Backup program settings? Anyway, now my BIOS and Raidiator software are up to date and I have removed the failing drive. Not too hard really, just typical noob stuff. Seems there is no problem using a USB 3 drive on the front port of a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus...
