No, that won't work at all. You need to connect the drives to the PC, not the NAS. There are USB/IDE/SATA converters you can buy for this purpose (though if you have a desktop you can simply connect the drives to the PC internally using a spare SATA and power connector).

that will not work. you need internal sata ports, not any usb to sata adapters or enclosures. these will not work at all.

Erm... Worked for me. Have a SATA to USB docking station that I used with my Seagate drives. It may depend on the manufacturer (ie the software they use to manage the upgrade). Admittedly was about 3 years ago upgrading firmware in the 1.5TB drives I have in my Ultra-4

interesting. i tried it myself a couple years back and it wouldnt even detect usb enclosures since it usually cuts off the drives ID (which makes the detection tool miss it).

anyway, i wouldnt recommend it. if you have free internal sata ports, use those.

I am a Mac Mini owner, so no option for sata port connectivity...

...but my wife has a Toshiba laptop (but still no sata ports).

So, there seems to be some dispute amongst fellow ReadyNAS owners that something like this sata dock would work via my wife's laptop pc - http://tinyurl.com/ctesg77

i guess you can only try. i personally have had bad experience upgrading drives in usb enclosures and cannot recommend it, but obviously others fared better than me.
the worst that can happen is that it just wont detect the drives in the update software.

I haven't tried icybox, but I do use an adapter that looks like this one quite successfully. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812232002 Not sure if mine is precisely identical to this link though. I suspect that there is variation in how well the adapters behave, so results might vary depending on what you buy.

I don't think anyone claims that the adapters will always work. Internal sata or esata (if you have it) is the most reliable, but sata also requires opening up a desktop PC (which in your case you don't even have). So an adapter is the best you can do.

If I did buy the Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 ST2000DM001, and I don't upgrade to the latest Seagate firmware, what is the worst that could happen if installed in my NV+.v2?

Most of the recent posts are on the ST2000DL003-9VT166, not the ST2000DM001.
