WD10EARS 1TB Caviar Green TLER not supported

I have been reading around the forum as well as the qnap forum and various online blogs and have read there may be problems when using Caviar Green drives in the ReadyNAS.

I have just ran WDidle3 and changed the timer to 300 seconds but WDTLERscan shows my drive doesn't have the TLER facility. My question is am I going to have any problems because of this?

I will be putting them into a ReadyNAS Pro 2 on the latest RAIDiator firmware.

Thanks :)

The ReadyNAS supports WD drives that don't support TLER. Not sure what firmware version this was added in (was quite a while ago now) but would definitely be in latest firmware. Of course please stick to the Hard Disk HCL as it's possible some drives may have unrelated compatibility issues.
  • Thanks for that mdgm. I did read that RAIDator now supports WD drives with no TLER support but just wanted to make a quick post in case someone could highlight anything I have missed from their experience with these drives. The Pro 2 has cost a lot of money so if these drives will not work well I will buy another model, although reluctant to do so with such high prices atm.

Well these drives are not on the Hard Disk HCL for your model so I wouldn't use them. If you have issues NetGear will deny support.

My personal preference would be not to use WD Green drives anyway.
  • TBH if the HDD supply chain wasn't as it was then I would immediately purchase another pair but as I have 4 brand new WD10EARS drives here I thought I would use them if it wouldn't cause any major problems until the supply increases and 1TB drives fall back down to the sub-£50 level.

That said, if anyone has experienced a failure with this setup or if it is likely failure is to occur I would of course purchase a new pair today :)

Thanks for your fast replies, very much appreciated.

What's the suffix on your version of the WD10EARS (the bit after the dash in the model name)?
  • 00MVWB0

I just put the two into a brand new Pro 2 and it came up in RAIDar as corrupt root. I seem to remember having the same problem with a new Duo last month using these same HDDs (without altering the idle as I was not aware of the problem then). After a lot of restarts, resets etc. I finally got the Duo to work with these HDDs and since the duo has worked correctly. I will however check out the logs to see if it is encountering a lot of error counts.
  • A factory reset with the drives inserted has allowed RAIDar to create the volume on the disks. I will update the FW when that is done as it has shipped to me with 4.2.17 installed.

Though the WD20EARS is on the compatibility list only a specific version is: the WD20EARS-00S8B1 which is older than the 00MVWB0. When using disks not on the compatibility list it's more important than ever to ensure you have an up to date backup of important data primarily stored on the NAS.
  • Thanks mdgm, we intend to have a weekly backup to external USB HDD which will be stored off-site and will be considering a cloud backup service in addition. Just for reference, there are only 2 ATA errors on each HDD and 11 and 13 load cycle errors. These figures do not change after rebooting and did not change overnight.
