WD2003FYYS RE4 - 2.0TB

Hello,

I was thinking of buying 4 of these WD2003FYYS disks for my NVX. But they are not listed in the official NVX Hcl.
On the other hand when i take a look in the HCL of the NVX pioneer edition, then this drive is listed.

Is it safe to assume that the drives are also compatible with the NVX?

Thanks for your feed back

Yesterday i received my new DUO v2 as a replacement to the old DUO. I installed two new WDC RE4 WD2003FYYS and they are working perfectly. I'm using the latest 5.3.5-T33 firmware. These disks are not yet in the official compatibility list. However that list mentions a RE4-GP WD2002FYPS which i think is a bit older than the FYYS.

OK, what i'm going to write, has happened twice the last 4 days. My nas is placed next to my computer and connected to my router through a CAT6 cable. Both times I was watching a movie and my nas was uploading some files using tramission  .But the traffic was low, no big deal, i think 30-40Kbps upload speed. Anyway, sometime while watching, i noticed that something was producing some noise as if a motor was running outside my house. I put my ear closer to the nas and i got surprised to find out that it was its fan that was producing this sound. It was not annoying, it was just working hard to lower down the temperature. And i saw that in the Dashboard. It's temperature was 43C for the system and both disks and the fan speed was 3072rpms instead of the normal 763rpms. However, the hard disk light was not blinking. I remember reading someday that these RE disks should be used for server operation and also that they tend to reach high temperatures if they are not airconditioned. Considering that in Greece the temperature does not drop under 25C at nights during summer, the system (and the disks) reacted as they should. I forgot to mention that i had my airconditiong switched off.

So, if you're thinking of buying such a disk and you lack airconditioning, you should reconsider. I'll see how it goes and if it gets worse (since temperature will go higher here), I'll probably replace the disks with something that does not get so warm.

    Will keep you posted...

PS. The logs do NOT contain any errors
  • Interesting. We are using four WDC RE4 WD2003FYYS disks in our ReadyNAS NVX Business Edition using X-RAID2. Frontview is saying each disk is running at either 40 C (104 F) or 42C (107 F). The system fan is running at 2109 RPM and system temp is 42 C (107 F), which is right in the middle of normal. However, our ReadyNAS is in a chilled storage room. If you have the funds, you might want to try placing your ReadyNAS Duo in a cooler part of the house, like a basement or concrete area, then using a Powerline system (more reliable than wireless) to connect it back to your router.
  • I don't have the funds right now. I also live in an apartment on the 2nd floor so the basement is out of the question. Today the weather temperature reached 34 and this issue occured multiple times. When the NAS has been cooled enough, the fan speed goes normal again. The whole procedure takes about 2-3 minutes, from speeding up and back to normal. I have to switch the NAS off during the night because i can hear it from another room. I think i'm going to replace the disks.

The key difference between RE4 WD2003FYYS and RE4-GP WD2002FYPS are the letters GP. In Western Digital, GP stands for Green Power which is their low wattage/noise/heat models. What makes a Green Power drive (RE4-GP) different to the normal RE4 is that they spin at a lower RPM, IntelliPower according to Western Digital. IIRC they're 5900RPM vs 7200RPM for the normal RE4.
  • I finally replaced the disks. Please see this thread for more info. With the WD disks, the system was getting hot and the fan was operating at more than 3.000 rpms and this occurred about 20 times per day. Since the weather in Greece is like hell right now (33C at 1.00am!!), i could not sleep because of the noise, and despite having the NAS in another room, i could still hear the fan working. With the new disks it seems to be operating fine.

EDIT: After almost a week, the fan operated at normal speeds (i think around 750rpms). So the RE4 disks DEFINITELY cause the heating problem.
