Which NAS
I have a ReadyNAS NVX with 4 disks. As one of my backup disks is now too small, I can either get a bigger one or take the opportunity to buy a new product, then usethe NVX as a backup (with ReadyNAS Replicate).
My default would probably be a diskless 314 - but does it offer me anything over a lesser model?
This is a home system, used by only a couple of users at a time and rarely does more than act as a file store. I have a handful of user shares and a few other shares. Only 2TB of storage. Backup to USB disks, plus ReadyNAS Vault for 5 GB of user shares. Rarely it serves up a video to the TV, or some music. I have been, and remain, happy with the NVX other than the inability to act as "cloud" storage (ReadyNAS remote was useless as user shares could not be accessed and there is no way I am paying for Egnyte) and I was a little peeved when the facility came about but my product was not given an update (despite it being possible). Because of that, I am open to other manufacturer solutions if they would be better/cheaper).
Assuming I get a new ReadyNAS, how do I get the data off the old one, onto the new one, so it can be accessed in the same way as at present?

The RN314 (or any ReadyNAS OS 6 model) does not have expansion limits. Check this link as reference: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... n-readynas
ReadyNAS Replicate is free on the RN314 (or any ReadyNAS OS 6 model).
You may check the full comparison of the ReadyNAS OS 6 models here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... -RN700.pdfdmahon wrote: Assuming I get a new ReadyNAS, how do I get the data off the old one, onto the new one, so it can be accessed in the same way as at present?
You may use Rsync tobackup your data from the NVX to the RN314. Check these links below:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... /related/1 - dmahon1AspirantThat will recreate the shares, including user shares, on the new NAS and can put them in the main drive (C:), not in a backup share (eg Pablo) like the example in the link?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe RN104 and RN204 would also serve your needs, though I think the RN104 might a bit slower than your NVX.
Migrating with rsync works, just make sure to match the UIDs and GIDs of any user accounts. Personally I just always use the admin account, which already matches across the platforms. - RXLuminary

It will not recreate the shares on the destination NAS (RN314), you will be the one to create the share on the destination NAS then you will select which share (on the destination NAS) where you will backup the files from your NVX. If you want to select the default backup share on the destination NAS, then its alright as well. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
What I do is re-create my shares on the new NAS, and then create an rsync job for each on the new NAS. They will end up in the the correct shares.dmahon wrote: That will recreate the shares, including user shares, on the new NAS and can put them in the main drive (C:), not in a backup share (eg Pablo) like the example in the link?
I also use frontview backup for backing up those shares (same concept in the reverse direction), though you can use replicate as well.
Do you use the "private" home shares? - dmahon1AspirantYes, I do use the private home shares (I was mistakenly calling them user shares above).

For those I suggest using the frontview backup option to back up all of home, but backing it up to a temporary share (userdata or some such).dmahon wrote: Yes, I do use the private home shares (I was mistakenly calling them user shares above).
Then use each user's credential to access their share, and drag/drop the files to the new private share. That avoids any permissions issues. Later on, I'd do the same in reverse for the backup (backing up "home" to a regular share on the NVX)
