how to ssh non-root?
Hi all, newb here, I am just playing around with my Ultra2+ before I put any real data on it so that I can try everything out, decide what works and then do a factory default on it.
I already found the Root SSH enabler, with all the warnings about voiding my warranty, but I am trying to figure out how to gain ssh non-root access. I found the Toggle SSH addin and ran it a few times, enabling and disabling ssh. Finally end with it enabled. When I try to ssh into the box using the only user login/password that I created from Frontview, I get the following prompt for password, which I enter and then it seems to login and immediately logout:
Seems like it is logging in and immediately logging off. Perhaps this is in some way related to no home dir found or something? Why can't I login SSH non-root somehow?
I want to try to add some cron scripts and things like that, for example to backup to Amazon S3, among other things. My intention is to try to figure out how to do everything I can WITHOUT having to resort to root ssh access, so that I can be safer and compliant with the warranty. But at this point I can't figure out how to ssh non root. Any ideas?

You will need to use EnableRootSSH, and login with root at least once. Then enable your non-root users to be able to login.

viewtopic.php?p=83029#p83029 - Dewdman42Virtuosothanks a lot for the quick response! I like this forum already.
So if I understand correctly, I will have to void my warranty by installing EnableRootSSH, in order to fix /etc/passwd to be able to ssh more safely. Still not a bad idea to SSH non-root as much as I possibly can, but I do want to understand what exactly do I void with the warranty? I take personal responsibility for screwing up my linux config and having to re-factory it, but will the hardware warranty still be valid after messing with root?
Sounds like the toggler is still a good thing to use to disable SSH when I am not doing any work on it, just to be safe. I'm behind a firewall anyway. - chirpaLuminaryYou do not void your warranty by using the add-on. The issue comes down to if you SSH in and break your data volume (mounting stuff, formatting, etc), and it is clear to tech support that you broke something, they may ask you to factory default (reset) before they can help you with an issue. For general usage like what you are planning to use, there is no issue.
- Dewdman42VirtuosoThanks a lot chirpa. The support for this device is great!
