Accessing ReadyNAS Outside of Network
I have a Netgear RNDU6000 NAS. Is there anyway I can access it when I'm OUTSIDE of my home network (My notebook at school for instance)?
If router settings are required, I have a Netgear WNDR4500 router.

I have admin rights on my notebook. I don't *THINK* they have a firewall, and when I first went to use the wireless, I had to sign in with my user name (.edu email address) and password, but just that first time.
Another thing I'm wondering about too-at school, it's a public network (You have to go to school there or work there to access it, so it is somewhat limited). Does that mean that anybody else connected to that network could also get into my NAS, or even see what I'm up to on the internet? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTry using ReadyNAS Remote (http://www.readynas.com/remote). If you don't have a corporate firewall you should be O.K. There is the ability to enter proxy settings if a web proxy is used there. ReadyNAS Remote provides secure access to your ReadyNAS over a VPN. One of the benefits of it is that you don't need to open ports on your WNDR4500's firewall.
If ReadyNAS Remote won't work for you then other options could be considered. - kturcotteAspirantTrying that, but Netgear's download servers appear to be down lol
What about security though? How secure am I on that network? It's obviously restricted to students/staff, but there's no actual encryption (Unless that first login is a different form of encryption?). How visible/vulnerable am I on that network? I have Zone Alarm free installed-is that enough? Should I be doing more? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredLock your computer if you leave it on while you are away from it and you should be O.K.
- kturcotteAspirantI don't let my computer out of my sight. Plus it's password protected the second it sleeps/I close the screen. How secure am I though while I'm on that network?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou should be fine. ReadyNAS Remote is secure and there is an option to encrypt traffic.
In any case regardless of whether you remotely access your NAS or not you should ensure you keep a good backup. - Edwin1Aspirant

I think if you have no security on your computer than you may loss your data when you are away from the computer. And also may your security devices that are installed with your system will hacked and you have to face any loss.
