After update of 516 from 6.6.1 to 6.8.1 old volumes from prior factory default showed back up

Somewhere in between those two updates (I forget where), Netgear did add something that more aggrssively finds "lost" volumes. It is most likely completely safe to destroy them, as that is why they are searched out. But if you want to be sure, SSH into the unit and execute lsblk and make sure that the phantom volumes are not associated with any of your drives. You should probably update your backup, too, just in case things get messy.

Yes you can destroy the old volumes, but updating your backup first as Sandshark suggested is a good step. We do recommend where possible that you update your regular backup before updating the firmware.
