All FTP backup jobs become Full = "Every Time" with upgrade
I just upgraded from 4.2.15 to 4.2.17. Now, all my FTP backup jobs have been changed to "Schedule Full Backup: Every Time." "Every Time" is the only option in the drop-down, so I can't fix them! This is ridiculous, now all my FTP backup jobs are just re-running the same data and never get to the new data before failing out!
I have an NVX. I have about five jobs that are ruined.
I cannot recreate them, either. If I create a new backup job, when the screen loads I see all the proper options for this drop-down:
First time
Every week
Every 2 weeks
Every 3 weeks
Every 4 weeks
Every time
As soon as I change EITHER the source OR destination to FTP Site, the drop-down gets limited to "Every time!"

- ewokNETGEAR ExpertI'm glad you're trying rsync. It's a far better solution for incrementals than FTP since it was designed from the beginning for that purpose.
- alldidasmcAspirantI'm getting thousands of these errors:
rsync: set_acl: sys_acl_set_file([filename].[ext].MXozFK, ACL_TYPE_ACCESS): Operation not supported (95)
I replaced the filename with [filename] and the original extension with [ext]. My point was to illustrate that the filename listed is basically in the format foo.txt.MXozFK. I don't have any double-extension files on the server and I have no garbage names like *.MXozFK. Is this something rsync creates?
And what is this error telling me? It sounds like a failure to set permissions, but I've gotten it on thousands of files.
Eventually the entire backup job failed out with:
Error encountered copying data from source path [source_path] ==> [remote_servername]:[remote_path] due to unknown reason. Please see log.
Which is exactly how all my FTP backups usually fail, after 12-40 hours.
-Robert - ewokNETGEAR ExpertIt sounds like those are rsync's temporary files. What is the remote server running in terms of operating system and filesystem? The error message is saying that the ACL on the file could not be preserved.
The failure message is most likely caused by the ACL issue though the data may have been transferred successfully. - alldidasmcAspirantThe server is running Debian linux (Lenny version 5.0.7).
- cmmmcAspirantI've been reading this thread carefully. I for one am extremely annoyed that this full FTP backup bug is still not sorted. Could somebody shed some light on this perhaps? I have an NVX Pro (with 4.2.17)
I contacted Netgear support on 2nd May with the following:Before upgrading to RAIDiator 4.2.16 (recently), I used to have FTP with the option "INCREMENTAL" backup (via the "FIRST TIME" setting). This was in 4.2.15.
Now, I realise that this option in 4.2.16 is no longer available to me? Has this been removed or should it be there?
Allow me to explain. I did some fact finding and if I create a new backup job, FIRST TIME is available (plus every week, 2,3,4 weeks) - as it used to be. However, as soon as I choose FTP as my destination, these disappear. This wasn''t the case with my older firmware, which did incremental backups without a problem.
Netgear responded on 4th May:I understand you are having an issue with the FTP backup options.
I've tested this on our NVX and was able to replicate the results.
I don't believe this was meant to be changed like this, however I cannot verify that yet.
I will go ahead and send up an e-mail to our engineers to verify if this is an error in the latest 4.2.16 firmware.
And then confirmed on 8th May (after I chased them):There has been no direct answer to your case, but multiple bugs have been fixed on a very shortly up-coming release of 4.2.16

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to find a proper FTP backup solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg these days, let alone an rsync solution with decent storage space at good value. My backup solution with Livedrive.com works great - if only this bug (which didn't exist before) could be ironed out. Then I can get back to doing incremental backups again. For now, every large backup I do keeps crashing (as it's doing the backup over and over again).
Now, it is ludicrous that this bug is still not resolved  and any tips from the forum experts would be most welcome!
Thanks for any pointers / help!! :( - alldidasmcAspirantcmmmc,
Wow, you actually got a rep to confirm they saw the problem; my rep kept telling me "there were no changes to the FTP backup functionality between 4.2.15 and 4.2.17." Then, they finally came back and said they had received too many complaints that the incremental backup didn't work so they took it out.
I have submitted a request to an escalation engineer to have this resolved. It is obviously USELESS to have an FTP backup that only works in FULL mode!
-Robert - cmmmcAspirantAnyone know if the new version 4.2.19 supports incremental FTP again?
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=55394 - ewokNETGEAR ExpertPlease give this addon a try, it will restore the old behavior:
http://www.readynas.com/contributed/ewo ... .1-x86.bin
Warning: the reason this was taken out is because this behavior is actually pseudo-incremental and can have nasty side effects. Incremental backup was a side effect of having upload resumes enabled. With upload resumes enabled, the backup manager will try to resume uploading a file if a file of the same name on the destination side was smaller than that of the file on the source side, regardless of whether the rest of the file matches or not. - cmmmcAspirant

Firstly, it is really bad that there is no checksum validated, but for the time being I'm willing to live with that. This should be fixed though; how can one call this a backup solution.
Anyway, I do also want to thank you for finally re-enabling the crucial Incremental FTP in the meantime. Without it, my Readynas box is useless (what is a backup solution if you cannot back up remotely)
Now, I did install the add-on, but it does not appear to be working for me? (or at least, I can't see it working). I have a ReadyNas NVX with 4.2.17.
The firmware update or add-on image is valid. Click Perform System Update if you wish to install the image now.
Name: Toggle_FTP_Backup_Upload_Resume
Version: 0.1
Date: Sat Aug 6 01:33:01 2011
Size: 10 KB
I updated it three times in total
1. First, I noticed "The Toggle_FTP_Backup_Upload_Resume add-on has been successfully installed." followed by "Successfully enabled FTP backup upload resume."
I did not see any changes and decided to reboot the device.
2. I installed it again and now it said "Successfully disabled FTP backup upload resume." (ok, so the toggle is working)
3. Finally, I re-enabled it again (so I think) and saw yet another "Successfully enabled FTP backup upload resume."
Again, after a reboot I still don't see a change.
The “Schedule full backup” option still only has one option when you select Remote FTP; “Every time”???
Please confirm how this should work and what we should expect to see. Thanks in advance! - ewokNETGEAR Expert

The change is only in the backend, so the UI will appear the same. Every FTP backup will be incremental with the toggle enabled. I'd suggest trying it with a small dataset if you want to get a feel for how it works.
