Backup not working
I haven't run my regular backup jobs for a month. In that time I have:
Replaced disk #1 after failure & resynced
Replaced disk #2 after failure & resynced
Upgraded to version 4 of FrontView
None of my previously existing Remote: Windows (NAS/Timestamp) backup jobs work. I get an "unable to access remote share" error.
I have tried:
1) Resetting up the backup job - still get "unable to acess" error
2) Swapping forward slashes for back slashes - still get error
3) Verified the backup locations are reachable from other locations on my Windows network.
Attached is a snippet from one of my backup jobs. Any help would be appreciated:

- ewokNETGEAR ExpertDo you have a file named personalBack in the destination share?
- arnie1Aspiranthi, sorry for the late reply. I wanted to rule out it wasn't anything on my windows server causing any problems but i formatted the drive, recreated the share and checked it all working. still same problem.
So the issue is definately with the Readynas :( :slap:
Latest log of errors:
cp: cannot create regular file '/job_001/xxx/xx_xx.doc': Not a directory './Dad/xxxx-xxxx.doc' -> '/job_001/Dad/xxxx-xxxx.doc'
cp: cannot create regular file '/job_001/xxx/xxxx-xxxx.doc': Not a directory..
sorry hashed out file names (personal directory)..if you want me to pm you the log i can :)
Regards
Arnie - ewokNETGEAR Expert

Do you have a file of some sort named "dad" or "Dad" (or any other combination of capitalization) in the root of the destination share? It seems to be complaining about something blocking the creation of a file or folder.
You may want to try pointing the backup job to a new empty share on the destination machine to see if it still causes problems. - arnie1AspirantOk this is confusing. I created another share on my another windows machine and it worked on that. BUT on my backup server which is a safecom NAS it always fails. The folders get created bt no files are copied accross. The logs don't say much more either.. i'm really confused :s
The destination share is a blank drive. the backup job creates all the folders and then fails.
UPDATE: ok it gets weirder. I tried just copying one folder from the share, it failed with an error but all the top level files were copied with 0bytes (two folders which were empty, 2 blank excel files and 2 blank notepad files.)
UPDATE-2: ok i loged into the nas via ssh and manually mounted the remote drive and did an ls. The following is what is had after i run a backup and it failed:
RNas:~/tmp# ls
â©â? entsf lRâ©â? onsn PkRâ©â? sentationsc UPkRâ©â?
? kRâ©â? lso PkRâ©â? Râ©â? sTâ©â? UPkRâ©â?
ampd lRâ©â? nc PkRâ©â? Râ©â? ülRâ©â? y Liste
RNas:~/tmp#
so basically its creating jibberish folders? :s - ewokNETGEAR ExpertWhat command line did you use to mount the remote share?
What is the Safecom NAS running? What kind of filesystem is it using? - arnie1AspirantI used:
mount -t smbfs -o username=admin,password=xxxxx
xxxx:~# mount
//xxxxx/personalBkup on /root/tmp type smbfs (0)
http://safecom.cn/code/sub/category.asp ... ubcatid=48 < the safecom device i'm using. Not sure what file system it is but it has samba - ewokNETGEAR ExpertWhat happens if you manally mount the Safecom NAS and copy some files over directly from the ReadyNAS?
- arnie1Aspirantxxxx:~# cd tmp/
xxxx:~/tmp# ls
? kRâ©â? lso PkRâ©â? Râ©â? sTâ©â? UPkRâ©â?
ampd lRâ©â? nc PkRâ©â? Râ©â? ?}üâal? UPkRâ©â?
â©â? entsf lRâ©â? onsn PkRâ©â? sentationsc ülRâ©â? y Liste
xxxx:~/tmp# mkdir testing
xxxx:~/tmp# ls

it doesn't display but it manually it copies it fine.. the mp3 i copied accross played fine and the folder was there as well. - ewokNETGEAR ExpertPerhaps this is a language or character set issue on the Safecom. Does it have options for language or character set?
- arnie1Aspirantumm no it doesn't, this was working fine before the upgrade to v4. I used this to do all my backups before i upgraded to version v4. So something has happened since the upgrade which is why its really weird.
Something on the Readynas is not recognising the drive anymore. I tried the backups with the safecom in the same state, factory reset it, created new shares, shares with different names e.t.c so I'm pretty sure this is an issue on the Readynas.
How does the Readynas do backup jobs? does it mount the drive then copy across? if so does it log anywhere how its mounting?
