boot issue after psu blow out #23003280
well the long story is that I came home to find the nv+ (v1) off, and the psu was dead so I managed to get it replaced for free under that old known issue (even though I replaced it once back then - score!).
anyway, swapped it out without incident, booted it up and ran into a weird boot problem that I can't find on the boards anywhere, so here I am! :?
the boot sequence goes like this:
power on
the led shows "ready to the readynas world!"
the led shows "aux switch:"
the led shows "1. boot debug"
the led shows "6. user diag"
the led shows "user diag..."
the power button is pulsing - I wouldn't call it rapidly.
haaang time.
the drive leds flash once during the boot up, but never in a sustained fashion, making me think it's a nv+ system issue rather than a bad drive.
I was able to access the boot menu using the reset button but was not able to complete the os reinstall (the system hangs here too).
I wasn't able to access the boot menu using the power button (it just goes straight into the aux switch thingy).
I disassembled the device itself as much as I could and cleaned it out a bit (gets pretty dusty in there) without effect.
I reseated the memory too.
any input would be really appreciated.

- freshdAspirantokay after chatting w/ tech support (pretty helpful but no resolution) I'm bidding on a replacement unit and would like confirmation (if I win) that I can just add the drives to the new unit and run okay...
baby pictures are at stake here!!!
thanks for your time!!! - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf the NAS is also an NV+ v1 you can migrate the disks (assuming they are intact of course).
If the firmware in the NAS flash doesn't match the version on the drives, then the NAS will upgrade (or downgrade) the OS partition. So ideally you'd initially start the system with a scratch disk (only) and then install the same firmware version you had on your old one. Then power it down, and install the old disks (preserving the slot numbers).
After it is running again, back it up! - freshdAspiranthi and thanks for the reply.
lost a little sleep over this last night but feeling a little better today. :)
just wondering a couple things:
in case I somehow mixed up the drives in the multiple removals since it died, is there any way to find out which one is which?
and in a similar vein,
is there any way to extract the data off the drives w/o investing in another nv+ (would like to upgrade).
thank you for your expertise!
dave - freshdAspiranthave just scanned through this:
http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306
and will try that method but wanted to see if anyone has tried it on a mac?
do I just mount up one drive at a time and pull data off?
there won't be any broken files?
how does the x-raid handle files across drives?
sorry about the question bombs and thanks for looking!!! - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'm not a mac guy, so I can't help you there.
If you are using xraid with 4 drives installed, then you would need at least three of them simultaneously mounted to retrieve your data. In your NAS, the data is spread across drives 1-3, and drive 4 is a "parity" disk used to recover missing data. - freshdAspirantdoes drive order matter when attaching to an external computer to mount the drives?
it looks like I can run ubuntu on my osX86 box so I'll be trying that while waiting for the auction to end.
even if I can mount the drives, I'll still have to figure out where to put the data, but that's for later to worry about, haha.
work in progress... - freshdAspiranta little update...
got ubuntu up and running on a vm.
called around to see if anyone has a device I could rent to dump my data onto - nope (apparently people think you're crazy if you have 3-4TB of data).
called around trying to find a sata card to add to my system nearby - no luck there.
made a desperation run to Best Buy for a sata card - absolutely nothing (wasn't surprised, but 4TB drives sure are cheap).
unfortunately my tower only has 3 sata slots available (one for the boot drive) so it's a bit of a problem.
have been attaching drives and attempting to get vgscan to find the volume.
I don't know if drive order matters, but it was able to identify a volume and that a drive was missing w/ drive 4 attached, so I'll try drives 2, 3 and 4 and see if it works (wasn't even finding a volume w/ 1, 2 and 3 only attached).
that's where it is now...will keep updating.
