Camera import function OS 6.5 on
Hi,
I have used ReadyNAS 314 for about a year now and works fine.
The last few days I have started to use the Backup/Import function where you can specify where photos from a camera
should be uploaded on the NAS in automatic way, provided the camera support MTP or PTP protocol. The upload is
done using a cable, i.e. it is NOT about uploading photos through a memory card reader (functionality found in OS4).
It is all briefly described in the current manual for OS 6.5 on page 232-233.
I have tested it and it works and you get both information in the logg as well as on the
small display on the NAS about the stages of the transfer: preparing, copying, successful done (alt some errror).
This is good. It is also good that the copying process start to check if some photos already transferred
and only transfer those that are not in the NAS already. Means you can incrementally copy photos to the NAS a few
times before formating the memory card in the camera, without getting a lot ducplicates. Also very good.
The problem is where the photos are transferred.
I find the photos come to the folder I defined when setting up Import on the NAS.
Since I have a Nikon camera a folder called Nikon-xxx (and some info about model etc).
Inside this folder I get folder 2016 and inside that folder I get a folder 10-october.
It seems as I should automatically get a new bottom folder if I take in photos another day
and photos taken from some other time. What I find is that all photos land in the same
folder called 10-October, although photos are taken 15,16 and today 17 October.
One possibility was that 10-October is related to when the memory card was formatted
but that is not true either. The last few photos I took in during second transfer was after
reformatting the memory card today October-17 but did not result the last few photos
came to a new folder.
I have talked with Nikon and there are no settings in the camera for controlling the
name of the folder where photos should land. One could consider several alternatives
here: date of photos taken, week of photos taken, time memory card was last formatted etc.
But here is no choice to be made. Seems this choice is done by the Netgear software
and here likely is a bug, since the folder name is not updated in anyway.
A somewhat similar functionaly was avaialble in OS4 (where it was possible to automatically
copy from memory card reader instead) and here I got a new folder name based on date and time
of transfer, which is also useful.
It would be good to know from the community as well as Netgear:
- any other customers with similar problem?
- is the naming of the folders controlled by Netgear as I think or is it a Nikon error after all?
- Is there after all some settings to be made on the NAS to get the naming of folders updated in some way for each import?
Since photo enthusiasts are one target group of Netgear for some of its products that runs on OS6 I think
it would be in their clear interest to make this better.
Regards
Jan Peter

I have a similar issue but I am also finding that the device only copies files with a .jpg extension whereas most of my photos are stored in the Nikon RAW (NEF) format. It would be very useful if I could connect up the camera, have it look for any new files, and back those up in the same organization as the memory card.

Hi janpeter1,
This could be a good addition to our Idea Exchange for ReadyNAS.
If in case you have not posted this yet, please do so.
I will also be inquiring about your case as well.
