Cannot uninstall or upgrade Squeezebox on ReadyNAS Duo v1

I am having a severe problem with Squeezebox on my ReadyNAS Duo v1 (Sparc), running Radiator 4.1.10 with 2x 1Tb drives (xRaid config with 78% disk space used) with UPS and 1Gb memory.

I have been happily running the latest Logitech Media Server (LMS) v7.7.2 Sparc add-on with the above configuration since upgrading to this LMS version in March 2012 (and no problem with previous versions over the previous 2 yrs). However, I noticed Squeezebox misbehaving 2 weeks ago (not displaying album art or track names for local music files, but it is displaying correctly on remote music sources like Napster). I tried to fix this problem using the Logitech Media Server admin screen through the ReadyNAS (deleting and rescanning local music database a couple of times). By the way, this problem started around the same time that I had been backing up data from a laptop to the Backup directory on the ReadyNAS, and I briefly reached 81% disk space used, and received a warning from the the REadyNAS that I was approaching capacity, and since then I have deleted files on the ReadyNAS to bring down the disk space used to 78%. Anyway, not sure if this caused the problem, I decided to uninstall it and re-install the LMS add-in. This is where my problems really started.

LMS v7.7.2 uninstalled OK, and after re-booting the ReadyNAS, I tried to re-install LMS v7.7.2 again, using the same file as the original installation. The file verification passed OK, but when I proceeded with perform system update it failed with the pop-up message "invalid checksum detected in the update file. update aborted". I have downloaded fresh files, and tried the update using Internet Explorer 9 and Chrome latest version browsers, but with the same error result each time. I have tried wireless and direct ethernet cable too, with same result. I have also tried installing older LMS versions from my laptop which have worked in the past, but they now return the same error message, or sometimes the update just stops (fails) without any error message.

So then I thought maybe the ReadyNAS O/S is corrupted, so I tried to reinstall Radiator by downloading 4.1.10 again. The update seemingly completed OK with the pop-up message "please reboot the device to complete the update process", but then the ReadyNAS did not respond to the shutdown and reboot command through the ReadyNAS admin screen. So I manually shut down and restarted the ReadyNAS, and when it was up again the ReadyNAS admin screen has a pop-up message "Error: could not extract files properly".

After retrying this procedure a couple of times, I decided to perform the re-install OS from internal flash option (press reset button at rear of ReadyNAS for 5 secs on powerup). This seemingly completed successfully, and several configurations were returned to default settings which I reverted back. But I also noticed that "SqueezeCenter" had appeared in the "Streaming Services", which the location for the old Squeezebx add-in before the LMS update moved to the "Installed Add-ins" section. I tried to remove Squeezecenter, by checking the box and clicking remove, but the ReadyNAS just displayed the busy symbol briefly and the app stayed there. I then clicked "set-up" to see if it worked, and I got the same result, a brief busy symbol, but nothing else. After re-booting the ReadyNAS, SqueezeCenter is still there. I checked the logs, and saw that the operation had resulted in "error removing add-on package". Then I tried installing LMS 7.7.2 again, but it failed again with the same invalid checksum error message. I tried the above a few more times with re-boots and alternative browsers and wireless/wired, and with older versions of LMS, but with the same failed results.

So then I thought that maybe the OS in the internal flash is also corrupt, and I decided to re-install the OS from an external USB flash with an downloaded image of Radiator 4.1.10 (press power button at front of ReadyNAS for 20 secs or until drive light flashes a 4th time) using the instructions here http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_can_i_perform_a_boot_recovery_using_a_usb_flash_device. This seemed to complete OK, but unfortunately when I powered up again the status remains the same as described above. No improvement.

There are further steps I could take, based on advice I have seen using internet searches, but these involve SSH Access, and saw the warnings here http://www.readynas.com/?p=4203, so I have decided the best course is to stop here and ask for professional advice, through this forum. Hopefully it is the correct forum (Installation and Upgrade) for the problem that I am facing.

I simply do not seem to be able to get Squeezebox working (ie. uninstall or re-install) and I really want to continue using my Squeezebox players (I have three players, Boom, Duet and Radio) even though I know that Logitech has discontinued production. If there turns out to be no solution, and my ReadyNAS Duo is no longer capable of running LMS, I would consider investing in an expensive new ReadyNAS Ultra+ 4 (Intel), and copy over the data from my existing ReadyNAS, and install LMS Intel on this. But I hope that my ReadyNAS Duo can be made well again, at least in the short term.

Thanks for reading this, and I hope that someone can help.

best regards

Byron

  • On re-reading my posting, I realise that I spent too much space explaining how the problem evolved, and did not state the problem clearly from the outset.
That isn't going to help anyone to offer me a solution.

    So here is the problem:

I cannot uninstall the existing (non-working) SqueezeCenter add-in, and I get the error log message "error removing add-on package"
And I also cannot install the new Logitech Media Server add-in, and I get the pop-up error message "invalid checksum detected in the update file. update aborted"

I would really be grateful to anyone who can offer me a way forward.
My first posting explained all the steps I have taken so far.

    best regards

  • Final Update...
Unfortunately no-one had any advice for me. I guess that's probably because I had already tried everything apart from a factory reset.
So I've bought an Ultra4+ with 3x 3Tb in X-Raid config, which is now my primary unit with more storage than I can imagine using. Logitech Media Server runs much faster on this unit.
I copied over all my data from the Duo, then performed a factory reset on it and changed from X-Raid to FlexRaid 0 config, and I just use it as a non-redundant 2Tb backup for the Ultra.

Just for interest, I checked if the problems I had with the Duo had been fixed following the factory reset.
I found that the factory default version of SqueezeCenter still cannot be uninstallled, and results in "error removing add-on package" in the log. So I guess there is something faulty there.
However I was able to install the latest version of Logitech Media Server for the Duo, whereas before the factory reset this would always fail (invalid checksum). So this is a resolution.
But this is all academic, as I am using the Ultra to run Logitech Media Server now. Happy, but less money in the bank.
  • The dreaded "Invalid checksum detected in the update file. update aborted".
I am experiencing this exact same problem

"LMS v7.7.2 uninstalled OK, and after re-booting the ReadyNAS, I tried to re-install LMS v7.7.2 again, using the same file as the original installation. The file verification passed OK, but when I proceeded with perform system update it failed with the pop-up message "invalid checksum detected in the update file. update aborted"."

Mine is a Netgear NAS Duo. I was able to install "logitechmediaserver-7.7.2-sparc-readynas.bin" successfully in the past. I recently chose to install the 7.7.3 version because my LMS had become very unstable (dropping connections to the server, disconnecting from the server with increasing frequency while playing from my SB and SBP, both wired to the router). I have done the usual clean up, wipe clean the previous version steps. When I tried to re-installed (local), it said that file was ok, but then when I tried to run the update, i got the same pop-up message "invalid checksum detected in the update file. update aborted".

Have anyone of you found a solution for this problem (short of a factory reset)?
