Can't access ReadyNAS Pro 6

Hello friends,

As the title says, I have an old RNDP6000 and I can't access it. It had been turned off for a long time.

I'm using Windows 11 Pro.

Its readout shows it is on and displays its IP address. I can successfully ping that address with the cmd prompt, but it doesn't show up in Network.

I can log into the Control Panel through a web browser and log in, but the CP says "No shares currently available", and offers no options or menus.

I would welcome any and all advice! Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks, StephenB, it says:

"This site can't provide a secure connection

    (nas-ip-address) uses an unsupported protocol.

    ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

    Unsupported protocol

The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite."

    Basically that's what I get. :(

Most current browsers require TLS 1.2, and the Pro 6 doesn't have that.

You can regain access if you use Firefox, and set security.tls.version.min to 1 (browse to about:config and search for the setting).

After that you can install this add-on to update TLS.

If you want to use the NAS regularly, you should consider converting it to OS-6.  That conversion does reformat the drives, so you do need a full backup prior to conversion.

  • Sorry to say the result is the same.

Downloaded Firefox, went to about:config, found the security.tls.version (it was 4), set it to 1, closed and reopened Firefox, checked the setting (it had stayed at 1) and tried again.

In Firefox I can reach the CP and it says No shares currently accessible, same with Brave Browser.

Just in case this info is useful:

If I try to reach it through the network, Windows 11 Pro says:

    Windows cannot access \\(name)

    Error code: 0x80004005

    Unspecified error

As always, many thanks for the help.

You need to browse to https://nas-ip-admin/admin

The /admin matters, and I think you are leaving it out.

To get SMB access, you first have to go into "turn windows features on or off", and then then enable SMB 1.0/CIFS Client.  By default that is disabled.

  • Thanks, StephenB, that is working.

I can reach the NAS through the network (if I type it in; it still doesn't show up in the network window)

and I can access the control panel.

I downloaded the .bin file from github but I have no idea how to install the update. Can you nudge me in the right direction? Many thanks.

Go to this screen and click on "add new".

That was released in October 2010. so really old.  You could try updating it - the current (and final) firmware is 4.2.31

Still, you should see the ability to install a new add-on.  Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing.

    Re: the RAIDIATOR update:

Apologies in advance if this question is stupid-

Do I need a version of RAIDiator installed on the PC I'm using to control the NAS? The firmware update unpacks as a .31 file.

    Endless thanks.

RAIDiator runs on the NAS, not your PC.  The .31 is the last part of the version number.  The file has no "extension" .  Linux has no true extensions, though there are extension-like name conventions that are generally followed.

No, you manually upload the binary (which just ends in 31, it has no file extension) by clicking on "System" in the left pane, then update.  Select the "local" tab.  From there you can upload the binary.

After the install you will need to reboot.

Sorry to say that clicking on Update does nothing. The main part of the screen does not change. If I click on the Local tab nothing changes.

Here is a screenshot after I tried System/Update several times:

Notice the repetition of 'Pro6' in the top right corner.

        Am I toast?

  • My Duo does the same thing.  I managed to "workaround" this issue by installing an older version of Firefox.  I happened to pick 121.0 somewhat at random.  It worked.  Can't guarantee it will work for you but maybe worth a try.

So I had to uninstall my current FF.  I use Revo Uninstaller to get any remnants left behind by Windows (not sure it's necessary but I did).  Then installed 121/Win64/en_US/firefoxsetup 121.0.exe.   Again, 121 was picked at random.  If it doesn't work, try an earlier version.  Use a platform and language suitable for you.

Once I launched FF, I went to my Duo home page and no more issues with the menus.  Of course, FF wanted to upgrade so I let it.  It upgraded to 127.  That also worked.  Then it upgraded again to 142 and that resulted with the bad menu behavior.  So somewhere in between, this issue emerges.  So I uninstalled 142 and reinstalled 121.  This time I did a "custom" install and unchecked the Mozilla Maintenance Service (does the auto updates).  Once FF installed, I changed the default settings in General to "Check for updates but let me choose to install them).  The only issue here is the "nagging" to update.  However, I was able to fend off the update until I went through off the screens in my Duo.  They all displayed and worked fine.

Not to keep it this way long term, but it may allow you to install the add-on, then use another browser.  If that works, you can update FF.

Here's the FF page leading to the older versions.

saudade 121.0 worked, thank you. I've been able to update RAIDiator to 4.2.31.

Sorry to say I'm still experiencing strange behavior in the menus. Also I still can't see the NAS in Network, although I can access it by typing in the path.

That has always been hit or miss. One workaround is to set up a desktop shortcut that opens up the NAS shares in file explorer.  Though personally I just enter \\NAS-IP-ADDRESS

The answer here might depend on your plans.  Your NAS can be converted to run OS-6, which is much newer.  That requires a factory reset, so you do need a full backup of your data.  I also recommend upgrading the Pro 6 to run 2 GB or maybe 4 GB (2x2 GB memory sticks) prior to conversion.  That is inexpensive, and easy to do.

Were you able to install the add-on?  That would let you use other browsers.

  • Thanks, StephenB , I think I would like to convert to OS-6 and upgrade the memory sticks as well. I've got all the files on my other NAS, so nothing will be lost.

I was able to install the .bin file, but not sure I did it in the right sequence. (I installed it before updating RAIDiator.)

You all have been very helpful. I hope I can get this to be a healthy working NAS now, with your guidance. What should I do? I'm ready.

If https://192.168.0.2/admin works from Chrome, Edge, or Safari then the add-on is doing its job.

      After the RAM upgrade:

If you have the skills, you should probably back up the VPD before conversion.  The VPD is in aging flash memory, which sometimes gets corrupted.  If you have a copy, you can attempt to restore it when/if that happens.  fMore information on this is here:

      The conversion steps are

(Optionally) make sure the latest BIOS is installed before you do the conversion.  To do this you install  http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin as an add-on and reboot the NAS.  Do this after you backup the NAS.  This isn't necessary, but if you do want to update the BIOS it is easiest to do it prior to conversion

Basic instructions for the conversion itself are

      1. BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP
      2. Upload PREPR4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin as an add-on using the ReadyNAS web gui, but do not reboot afterwards (avoids the need to do manual factory resets)
      3. Upload R4toR6_6.9.5.bin using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
      4. After you upload the addon+firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default.
      5. Go through the setup process on the converted NAS
      6. Update the NAS to either 6.10.9 or 6.10.10 (check for updates will NOT work, you will have to do this manually).
      7. Restore files from the backup.

There is a small risk that the process could fail, and if that were to happen it might not be possible to get the NAS running again.

Installing add-ons is difficult, so best avoided.

Note that if you ever need to do a USB recovery later on, you will need to use the procedure for 4.2 systems - substituting an OS-6 image for the 4.2.31 one.

StephenB endless thanks once again. I'm getting pulled away from this effort for the time being and I am bookmarking the thread for when I come back.

If you prefer I can mark it as solution and start a new thread when I can come back to it.
