Can't connect to NVX..a little desperate!!
Ever since i rearranged some of my network gear, the readynas doesn't allow us to connect to it.
i also can't get to it in frontview, even though we are using the correct ip address.
i just have a simple setup now..modem connected to switch which is connected to our machines.
i recently retired what seemed to be a faulty netgear WR3500 router in the setup. it had only previously been
used as a switch.
it was seemingly faulty, so we retired it.
we use the NVX for general storage as well as Apple Timemachine.
can anyone help me out?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhen you say you were using the 3500 as a switch, do you mean that nothing was connected to the WAN port?
You can try a direct connect with a mac (wiring the ethernet cable directly to the mac NIC).
If you are using DHCP on the NAS, configure the PC to use IP 192.168.168.100 and subnet 255.255.255.0. The NAS should fail over to 192.168.168.168
If you are using a static IP in the NVX you can configure the PC to use an appropriate IP/subnet.
Another option is to do an OS reinstall from the NVX front panel. That will reset the IP config to dhcp and the admin password to netgear1. It shouldn't make any other changes, though of course there is always some risk. - ash1Aspirantmany thanks for the great suggestions,
though my knowledge of these things is very slight.
i've really had little to do with the setup of this machine.
i've used it for some years now, and when it goes down,
it's always too hard to recover it
except through a total hit and miss method.
"When you say you were using the 3500 as a switch, do you mean that nothing was connected to the WAN port?"
from lack of knowledge, i'm not really sure, but the modem was connected, and three of the four ethernet ports were full.
we didn't use the wireless either.

this is something i may be able to handle..
do you mean one ethernet cable from one of my macs straight to the nas?
as the nas is setup in an out of the way place this could be awkward but i could
try it.
do you think that this could fix things so that when i went back to the normal network setup
the nas would be back to how it functioned previously?
thanks again! - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe router should have 5 ports on the back (1 yellow). The yellow one would be the WAN port. If you are trying to use a router as a switch it is important not to plug into the WAN port.
If you can reach the NAS in direct connect mode you can reconfigure the ethernet so it works on your new network setup.
BTW, what IP address is RAIDar giving you for the NAS? Also, what IP is your Mac? - ash1Aspirantthanks again..
your understanding of this is obviously pretty good!
yes the yellow port was being utilised.
could that have disrupted the nas (by removing the the router device)?
btw, in the future, if i was going to used the wr3500 as a switch again, do i just use the power input and the four ethernet ports?
on the front screen of the nas and WakeOnLan it says the nas is 192.168.5.6.
in sys. prefs.>network the main window says:
"Ethernet is active and has ip address 192.168.1.123"
also, "using dhcp",
"subnet mask 255.255.255.0",
"router (which i think in this case is the modem?) 192.168.1.1
i will try to get a long cable to the nas, otherwise i'll retrieve it (pain) and bring it closer the the imac.
when i get it connected, what do i need to do to reconfigure the ethernet so it works moving forward?
cheers, tony - ash1AspirantOK, i have the nas connected directly to the imac...trusted 25mt lead..
raidar can't find it tho..
and safari won't connect to the said above ip address..
so don't see how i can connect?
'afp' and 'cifs' i can see in the sidebar (but wont connect)
and 'WakeOnLan' sees it, so i guess something sees it.
can i get some pointers on what to do next?

- ash1Aspiranthi,
no, but we may be looking down that barrel i guess.
i'm not familiar with this process.
also i'm concerned about what i'd need to do after the reinstall
to get the nas back to the user-settings i've had forever.
these were set up by someone else who is not around these days..
can you enlighten me a little?
cheers - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAn OS Re-install resets the admin password to default (for your device it is 'netgear1'). It also resets some network settings. Most of your configuration will remain intact.
The procedure is here: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu
Since things were working fine till you rearranged some network gear this will most likely resolve the problem as it will reset the network settings so that your NAS will pickup an I.P. address from your router. - ash1Aspiranti cannot express how thankful i am for the support you have given us here,
with a little sweat at this end all is working properly again so far..
i did the reinstall which brought the 192.168.168.168 failover.
still couldn't connect at that stage, so restarted everything in the device chain.
the nas reset to another ip address which raidar found.
we can connect from the sidebar to 'afp' and 'cifs' as well.
and to top it all off, timemachine seems fine on my machine... will check others later.
you are a gem!
many thanks! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired:)
