Folder Access to NAS

I have managed to set up my NAS fine, and it has been working brilliantly. I have set up my admin and primary user password but not added any other people's accounts. I have the ReadyNAS RN104 and running OS 6.6.1.

I can map a network drive to folders and it asks for passwords but I have noticed that on other pc's on the same network, there is a Network Location for the ReadyNAS visible (with the Netgear logo) and any PC seems to be able to access this without need for an account, let alone a password.

I have gone through the shares and edited the permissions to not be anonymous, and even as far as only admin account has access but the automatic network location can still access the files without any protection. I have already had one person access my files on the network without my permission and want to make sure there is only verified access.

I can't find anywhere to turn off this 'device' appearing automatically and only allowing access after maping a drive or web access, or at the very least making sure it is password protected.

Thanks for any help.

  • The icon you see is created by ReadyDLNA and gives access to the Pictures, Music, and Videos shares.  Since DLNA is a streaming service, it does not have user name or password protection.  I don't recall seeing anything in the Netgear documentation pointing that out, but it's not their choice, it's inherent in the protocol.  I personally think that DLNA should have parental controls capability, which you could use to keep eveyone else out, but it doesn't.

If you don't use DLNA on any devices, just disable the DLNA service in System/Settings.  If you do, then you will need to use care as to what you put in those folders.

      Hi Sandshark,

Thanks for replying. The thing is, when I open it, it does have those 3 folders, Music, Videos and Pictures, but it also shows "Browse Folders" which then accesses ALL of my shares, even those password protected.

That being said, I removed ReadyDNLA from the services settings and  that seems to have removed it. Thank you so much, I tried so many search strings but nothing would come up with what I needed and, being fairly new to the world of NAS systems, I didn't know about DNLA or Netgears variant.

      Thanks
