"Folder in Use" ReadyNAS 10400
Hi,
I have been try to edit some folder names on a ReadyNAS share using PC / Win 7 /Explorer. One edit works then I go to the next folder and get the message "Folder is in use or File in Folder is in use".
It seems if I go into the dashboard and change a setting in the share in an attempt to resolve this it works for the next edit I try then I get the error message on the next folder I try to edit.
Any Suggestions?
Geoff

- siignaNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you post a screenshot of your explorer window in which this happens?
- Geoff2005AspirantI have a screenshot, 650k jpg, but cant see a means to attach it to a post.
- Geoff2005AspirantSee if this works.

In this shot, just after rebooting the NAS had just edited folder name at top of list successfully and moved to edit the name of the 4th folder listed. Then the usual error message. Hitting "Try Again" does not make it happen. - siignaNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt looks like you have folder views with thumbnails turned on. We've seen this issue ourselves and there's a few threads around the Microsoft forums as well.

Have tried the change to gpedit on my desktop but has not resolved, other Win 7 PC's are however on the network and not sure if they maybe locking the files (with caching). I'll try later when I have the only PC running. - Geoff2005AspirantI tried editing folders in shares using laptop with Win 7 and gpedit setting of no caching, seemed higher proportion of edits successful but still some returned the "in use" response and could not be changed.
Does the ReadyNAS have any software that may scan through the folders and lock them whilst doing it, DLNA, Virus Protection, Snapshot?? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserVirus protection certainly - that is something you could try turning off.
DLNA scans could get in the way, again that is something you can turn off (with DLNA share by share).
Snapshots don't lock files or folders, since with btrfs they are built into the file system at a low level. If you have a snapshot for a folder, what happens is that as you update a file the old version is copied to the snapshot ("copy on write").
You could try changing the names in the web ui, and see if that is more reliable for you than SAMBA. - EnochPowellAspirantI am having the exact same issue. I just created an account here to ask and luckily found this thread before creating a new one. I am tech support for a company that uses a ReadyNAS Duo V2 and this issue is driving them insane. I tried disabling the antivirus software thinking that this could be the issue with no luck. I have not tried switching off the thumbnail cach yet. If anyone can shed any light on this I would be extremely grateful as I am under pressure to get this issue resolved asap.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced Usernogglet, the AV software mentioned above would be running on the NAS, not a PC accessing the NAS. AFAIK that is only an OS6 feature, and it not available on the duo v2.
Maybe start a new thread, and tell us the firmware version running on the v2, and also how full the disk volume is. - Geoff2005Aspirant

Virus Scanning off, DLNA not selected for folder. I had 2 windows open, a) Windows Explorer and b) Web UI both looking at the same share. Tried editing a folder name in Explorer and no joy, tried with Web UI and success.
Then I opened a file in Explorer (started a video) and was able to change the name of the file via Web UI while it was open and playing. It appears the Web UI is immune to the normal Windows file name edit reservation for open files.
