FTP download slow, upload fast
hi team,
hope someone can help with this one.
had me NAS Duo for over 5 years now and thought i would give my buddies remote access to store and download there own files.
I am on a fibre 76MB connection & when my buddy [who also has a fibre 76MB connection] and I transfer files to one another using Skype for example, the files flies across. Whether this be a file located on the NAS or on my PC, the transfer speed is superb.
When he connects directly to my NAS using FileZilla, the connection speed is a joke e.g. a std music file which would take a few mins on Skype is showing as completing in 3hrs 30mins @<1kb a sec 726B/s on FileZilla. When he uploads to my NAS, the speeds are fine again e.g. 12 tracks in 30secs.
Any ideas please? We have tried changing changing the settings to jumbo rates on all hardware - no diff. I have also tried changing the MTU - no diff and tried different logins for him - no diff.
So in summary, how can a Skype transfer from my PC to his where the file is located on the NAS be fine when a direct FTP is slow?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserJumbo Frames would certainly not help, since they only apply to the local LAN. NAS MTU is also unlikely to help, unless your fibre connection for some reason uses a smaller MTU than 1500 bytes.
The first thing to try is using FileZilla to upload from your PC to your NAS, and see what upload speeds you get when everything is local. - tagteam3283Aspirantthanks for the reply.
all the speeds on the home network are fine. the problem lies when connecting externally - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHave you tested your uplink speed with speedtest.net?
- tagteam3283Aspiranthi SB, we are both on fibre connection and the premises are both connected to the same local exchange. We are literally 400 metres away from each other.
All testing results are similar where we both get 65-70MB download and 15-16 upload.
The upload/ download speed of the broadband services has nothing to do with this problem. As I have already mentioned, when we transfer using skype, the transfer works perfectly. It is only when my user uploads to the NAS that it goes slow. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserMB usually means megabytes, I suspect you mean mbits???
You are saying that when you download from his NAS you get ~70mbits, and when he downloads from you he gets the same.
But when you upload to his NAS you get ~16 mbits, and he gets the same?
What upload speed do you get to your local NAS?
