FTP Setup - Masqurade As) help
I have a ReadyNas duo and am trying to set up the FTP service. I have created a DNS entry with DYNDNSservice, and I have set up my Linksys router to forward port 21 to my NAS IP address. I am having two issues:
1) in the FTP section on the NAS ADmin pages, It will not allow me to enter the DyNDNS name I have registered. I get the werror message " Could not find the masqurade in the DNS". If I enter the external IP address of my router, it saves fine. But that means I have to change the settings in the NAS everytime I get a new IP form my ISP, right?
2) when I try to connect via an FTP client, the DNS name resolves successfully to the IP address, but then I get the error: "Can't establish connection"
any ideas on why the NAS won't accept the masqurade entry, and what might be blocking the connection via the FTP client?
BTW, I had this working a year ago, but let the DNS expire, so had to reconfigure.
Thanks
Ventrj

- ReadySECUREApprenticeYes, if you used your public external IP you would have to change that every time your IP changes. You always want to make sure you up to date on your firmware. The latest being 4.1.7 for older spac based units and 4.2.18 for the x86 units. Is there anything particular about your DNS name? Was the setup working up until the DNS name expired? Use canyouseeme.org to verify if the port is open. It sounds like it is configured correctly. You may want to open a support ticket if you are on the latest firmware.

http://support.netgear.com - ventrjAspirantThanks for the reply. I am on FirmWare version 4.1.6, so I will try to upgrade the firmware on my NAS, though that upgrade does not mention anything around patches tot he FTP service. I checked canyouseeme.org and got the error
Error: I could not see your service on xx.xxx.xxx.xx on port (21) (masked my IP Address)
Reason: Connection timed out
I will also upgrade my router firmware. - sphardy1ApprenticeWhile it may not be noted in the release notes, 4.1.7 did address issues with the FTP server where it would crash and need to be restarted. So upgrading is highly recommended
- ventrjAspirantok, I have updated the firmware n both my router and my NAS, and nothing changes. The NAs still will not resolve the dynamic DNS address for the FTP Service, os I have to enter the public IP of my router, and I can not connect. Canyouseeme.com still times out and can not make a connection, FTP clients fail to connect. So< i am still in the same predicament as before. I have contacted my ISP and they tell me they are not blocking port 21, so I am stumped as to what the issue may be. Help?
- sphardy1ApprenticeDo you have appropriate DNS settings in Frontview? What are they?
Can you try connecting via FTP to the current WAN IP address - this will ensure FTP is working and that the real issue is DNS related - ventrjAspirantMy DNS settings under GLOBAL SETTINGS tab in FrontView has an entry of 64.252.196.1, which I believe is the DNS server for DYNDNS.com which I have my Dynmaic DNS name from (mtnbkr.dyndns-home.com). i tried connecting via CORE FTP LE directly to the WAN IP address and get the same error message.
- ventrjAspirantI think I gt it!!!! It looks lke the Default GATEWAY on the Global settings tab needed to be completed, and for what ever reason it was empty. When I put the internal IP address of my router into that field, I am able to connect via FTP!!! YIPEE!!!
- ventrjAspirantFYI... this also allowed the NAS to identify the Dynamic DNS name I established in the FTP Masqurade As field. So all is well now!!!
