FTPing files from Security DVR to ReadyNAS Duo
I have been tring to set up my CCTV DVR so that it will FTP video files to my ReadyNas Duo without success.
I have been able to successully run a test FTP from the DVR to my laptop and so have confirmed that the DVR is capable of sending the data.
DVR SIDE
FTP details held in my DVR are as follows
Server URL : 192.168.0.2 (the address of my NAS)
FTP Port : 21 (standard I beleive)
User Name : Joe Blogs
Password : xxxxxxxxx
I have set the DVR to send a video file every time Camera1 is triggered. I can see in the DVR Event_Log that events are being triggered and that FTP is attempted, but it fails to connect or send the file.
NAS Side
I Have enabled FTP in Standard File Protocols (Port=21, Authentication=User, Upload Resumes=Disabled, Passive ports xxxx to yyyy, Masquerade=BLANK)
I have a share named="JoeBloggs" (not my real name :? )
FTP/S Default Access = Read/Write, (no specific host/users/groups further specified)
The following FTP_Log entried may offer some clues.
Aug 15 15:02:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): FTP session opened.
Aug 15 15:02:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): Preparing to chroot to directory '/home/ftp'
Aug 15 15:02:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): USER ftp2: Login successful.
Aug 15 15:02:51 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): FTP session closed.
Note: I have tried many many permutations, the above /home/ftp attempt is just one of many.
No files are being copied.
Am I missing some key setup steps?
I don't think I have told the DVR all the information it requires to send the file. For example, how does the DVR know which share/folder to place the file?
Any guidance from the forum would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
MikeQ

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserNormally you would specify a path on the client (DVR side). If you don't specify a path, then the NAS will attempt to put in in the C volume - that transfer will fail.
- Think I've seen previously that adding the ip or hostname in the Masquerade box can solve some of the FTP problems... Sure the posts are here somewhere.

Can you enter 192.168.0.2/share in the server URL field ("share" being the actual name of the share you want the video to be placed in)? It might possibly need ftp://192.168.0.2/share. I think the main problem is that the NAS doesn't know the destination folder.Mikequ wrote:

Blank should default to the local IP address, but it is sensible to be explicit. Mine is set to the hostname.InTheShires wrote: Think I've seen previously that adding the ip or hostname in the Masquerade box can solve some of the FTP problems... - MikequAspirantHere are the steps I've taken today. Have not yet resolved the issue though.
1. Downloaded Filezilla Server. Set up a link between the DVR and my Laptop. Set all cameras to trigger an FTP of any vidoes to 192.168.0.3 (Laptop). Set it in motion for an hour and watched the files roll in.... All working well.
2. I have a ReadyNAS Duo V1 with Radiator 4.1.9. I thought that "Share Folder Owner" should not be set to nobody, tried to change it to "FTPuser". Would not work. After reading the Forum, I found that this is an issue and that 4.1.10-T3 would allow me to change this. Downloaded and installed 4.1.10-T3, changed "Share Folder Owner" to FTPuser.
So, I have a User called FTPuser, who belongs to a Group called FTPgroup. Within "Share Listings" I have a Share called "FTPshare". FTP/S Default Access is set to Disabled, Write enabled Host = 192.168.0.254, Write enabled Users FTPuser & Mike Q (that is me), Write enabled Group = FTP Group.
Summary
User = FTPuser
Group = FTPgroup
Share = FTPshare
Share Folder Owner = FTPuser
DVR settings are as follows;
Server URL = 192.168.0.2 (address of NAS)
Port = 21
User = FTPuser
password = *******
The error reported by the DVR is "FTP conn Failed"
The NAS FTP log reported the following
Aug 16 15:25:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[4080] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): FTP session opened.

I have reviewed the advice given so far by the forum and have tried the following
1. Changed Masquerading to 192.168.0.2, also tried Blank and nas-08-FD-4B. Did not solve problem.
2. Tried a more complete path e.g. 192.168.0.2/FTPshare. Did not solve problem.
3. Tried fttp://192.168.0.2/FTPshare. Did not solve problem.
I have spoken to the manufacturer of the DVR and their advice is that I should not need to carry out steps 2,3 above. Not sure I beleive this, but they say, only put 192.168.0.2 as server URL.
So, not yet fixed. Still hoping for a solution though, keep the ideas coming.
Regarding the /Home/FTP detail in the log. I do not know where "home" has come from, certainly not created by me. Does this offer a clue? - MikequAspirantI just had a thought on reading my last post.
The NAS FTP log "DOES" recognise that I am trying to put this into the FTP folder. As can be seen in the log entry "/home/ftp"
This suggests that the DVR does have enough information and that the issue lies within the NAS (or within my set up...)
UPDATE - SEE NEXT POST - MikequAspirantI am obviously still learning. I learn a little every day!!!!
I just found (net use t: \\192.168.x.xxx\c /user:admin password) to see the structure of the NAS.
1. No FTP'd files found. So the files are definitely not making it to the NAS
2. Mistake in post above - /Home/FTP does not suggest the DVR is sending to the correct location. Actual correct location is "FTPshare"
Still digging.
I will fix this. Even if it takes a while... - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I still think this is what you need to do.StephenB wrote: Can you enter 192.168.0.2/share in the server URL field ("share" being the actual name of the share you want the video to be placed in)? Thank you very much for your advice.
I will go back to the Supplier and ask for their advice once more to see if there is a change they can make. - MikequAspirantThis AM the supplier advised that they cannot fix the issue.
I’ve been discussing your FTP issue throughout the morning with the manufacturer of the MicroLite/NET DVR on skype. They have informed that the DVR cannot define which FTP folder it is sending to, this should be handled by the FTP server itself. Your FTP server on your NAS drive is not like most other FTP servers.
Can the community confirm this, Is the NAS unlike other servers?
As I received this reply I had just completed a test of FTP from my Laptop to the NAS. The results follow
Test 1 - Using FTP in DOS, connect to NAS (include User and Password). Do not change directory. Attempt to FTP file to NAS. Use DIR to see what folders are available at this level. Aiming to send file to FTPshare (folder).

TEST SUCCEEDED
This confirms what I aready knew I suppose. The question is, how to fix. - MikequAspirantSorry, but I cannot let this go. My mind is whizzing around every possibility...
Test 1 above, when I log in as FTPuser, the levels that are available to me are ADMIN and FTPshare. I can see how that would confuse an incoming FTP.
Test 2 above, I've made some permission changes. Now when I log in as admin, I can only see the admin share.
Does it then follow that, if I can somehow log into FTPuser and for NO OTHER shares except FTPshare to be visible, the FTP txn might work. Agree?
