Inaccessible files that survive formatting
Trying to erase everything on my ReadyNAS Duo v1. Most of my files were easily deleted but a handful were not. I have spent hours formatting (I have formatted using a mac, then a PC, then returned the HDD for the ReadyNAS Duo only to map the network drive and find that the folders are still there. Directly deleting doens't work. I have found several topics on this, but honestly the discussions quickly escalate beyond my comprehension. How can these files survive a 9 hour 'zero-out' formatting? Can someone help me confirm that my files are deleted? I can say that once I have formatted the disc, Nothing shows via finder (mac) or windows explorer. Satisfied, I return the disc to my ReadyNAS Duo, do a factory reset and re-map it only to find they are still there!!
Whats' the deal?!

- StephenBGuru - Experienced User(a) how many drives are in the duo?
(b) are you erasing both of them?
(c) What folders are you seeing? Are there files in them? - ckelly33AspirantI had one drive but went to two. That's why I am reformatting.
The folders that I see are various remnants of what I had before. The NAS has two main shares (I cannot remember if this is by default or if I set them up): Media and Backup. Backup seems fine but media has several subfolders that will not go away. When I browse Here are a few things I have noticed that may help (I hope):
1. right click-properties says files are read only. unchecking the read only box and clicking apply seems to work but when I right click on the same file it still says read only.
2. When trying to delete directly my PC says that I don't have permission
3. When going into Frontview->shares and clicking delete on those shares (media and backup) then clicking apply = does nothing - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Did you replace both, and want to reformat the original? Or did you simply want to do the factory default on the two new drives?ckelly33 wrote: I had one drive but went to two. That's why I am reformatting.
Media and Backup are default shares.ckelly33 wrote: The folders that I see are various remnants of what I had before. The NAS has two main shares (I cannot remember if this is by default or if I set them up): Media and Backup.
I am not sure exactly how you got to this state.ckelly33 wrote: Backup seems fine but media has several subfolders that will not go away.
If you already installed a second drive, then you are running RAID-1, which has redundancy. So if you remove one disk (leaving the second), format, and reinsert it, then NAS restores its original contents from the second disk. The factory default should have taken care of this, though it is possible you did an OS reinstall instead (especially if you used to paper-clip procedure).
You can try the factory default again using the Web UI with both drives in place. Go to system->update on the web UI, then select the factory default tab on the upper right. There is a "perform factory default" button on the page. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Media share has some folders in it by default.
You could also try deleting the Media share then recreating it if you really want to. - ckelly33Aspirant

The media subfolders I am seeing are music - Eagles, Filter, Pearl Jam, e t c. - ckelly33Aspirant

I did this. No change. I still cannot delete. I still cannot change the attributes of the folders that I would prefer deleted (uncheck read-only, hit apply the re-enter properties and the folder is still read-only. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTry enablng https as a protocol for the NAS Music share. Then go to https://nasname/shares and try deleting the folders there.
On Windows, did you set up the shares to be available off-line? - ckelly33Aspirant

Actually the unwanted folders that are showing up are not subfolders of the NAS Music folder, rather they fall directly under the Media folder (along with Music, Pictures and Videos).
As far as having set them up offline, how do I tell?
BTW, I did as you said earlier, I put both discs in and used frontview to restore to factory defaults. The folders are still there and I still cannot delete them :( - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Ok, then enable https for media. Are you accessing media as a mapped network drive (e.g. is there a drive letter)? If not, how are you accessing the folder from your PC?ckelly33 wrote: As far as having set them up offline, how do I tell?
Also, if you are using Windows, try going into the control panel and clicking "sync center". Then click on "manage offline files", and see if offine files are enabled or not.
Actually I suspect they are not on the NAS, but are in an off-line cache on your PC.ckelly33 wrote: BTW, I did as you said earlier, I put both discs in and used frontview to restore to factory defaults. The folders are still there and I still cannot delete them :( - ckelly33Aspirant

Yes. The drive is mapped, that is how I am accessing itStephenB wrote: Also, if you are using Windows, try going into the control panel and clicking "sync center". Then click on "manage offline files", and see if offine files are enabled or not.
Offline files are enabled for this. Looks like you are right! How do I remove this??!
