iPhoto '11 TROUBLE
My problems started when I launched iPhoto '11 for the first time. I received the warning
"The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
I had been using CIFS with no problem for iPhoto '09.
I turned on AFP and disabled CIFS to see if this protocol would be better for iPhoto '11. That is when the share that housed my iPhoto Library stopped working.
I now get the warning
"The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “iPhotos-NAS” can’t be found."
I have tried turning off AFP and turning back on CIFS. I have also restarted the ReadyNas Duo several times.
I am scared that my photos will be lost or corrupted. Please help if you can.
thank you

- camalexanderAspirantI am really poor at using terminal. What command do I need to type to navigate to the share. You were right about me not being able to open the share that houses the library.
thanks for your help! - sphardy1Apprentice

When I go to Frontview the share is there and all looks good.
For this type of issue, if you are not comfortable with commandline access, then there is little that can be done to investigate. I would recommend you contact Tech Support so they may have a look.
@toad - How acceptable performance is will be subjective and related to the functions you are using - if you are happy that is all that matters - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFor users who have not updated yet: Before updating to iPhoto '11 please follow the advice here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4431
- camalexanderAspirantJust to update everyone. After much emailing back and forth, Tech Support really came through and diagnosed my problem. After turning on AFP, I disabled CIFS to see if iPhoto performed any differently, and in doing this it automatically removes permission for guest access. So even after I enabled CIFS, I could not "find" the share because guest permissions were denied.
- djrobsdAspirantI know there hasn't been much discussion lately on this but I stumbled upon this thread after talking to Apple tech support about my iPhoto woes on my ReadyNAS Duo. The thing is, iPhoto does open and work with my 60 gig library totaling over 18000 photos (and a few videos here and there)... It starts up just fine, but the problem is that the thumbnails don't all load, so many of my albums when I open them up do not have any thumb nails. Also, occasionally I'll get a beach ball and it will freeze up, but then other times it seems to perform just fine.
Anyway, Apple told me it is not supported on any sort of network drive, so I've been trying to get it back to a local system or an external drive. Unfortunately, I'm having a difficult time getting it copied back to my system. Every time I go to copy the folder, it says "preparing to copy" and it just sits there for hours on end.... Does any one know how I can get it back to my system from the ReadyNAS? It's connected via gigabit ethernet, so speed shouldn't be a problem... - sphardy1ApprenticeCopy via the command line using terminal
- djrobsdAspirantThat's a great answer, but could you please elaborate what command I should use to do so and how to use it? I know how to do basic cp commands, but something tells me I need a more powerful command then cp to get it off there.
- sphardy1Apprenticecp would be perfectly adequate

Awesome. Even though this is supposed to be a help forum you wouldn't give me the proper command to accomplish what I was asking, I guess you're one of those Linux/Unix gurus who doesn't want to help other people learn Unix commands, whatever.
Fortunately, I was finally able to drag it using finder and it copied over just fine.
You have to use AFP first of all. Secondly, you need to be patient. Finder takes about an hour "preparing to copy". Then when it starts copying it will start out really slow and say that it's going to take a day to copy for the first gig or so then after that it picks up speed and it actually only took an hour to copy the entire 60 gig library once it finally got cranking. - sphardy1Apprentice

How perceptive - that must be why this is my 6th response to this thread; aimed at *not* helping someone who claimed to "know how to do basic cp commands" - which is all that is needed?
Don't worry - I won't waste your time again
