Just got an Ultra - can I install IMAP?

Hey, excuse my ignorance this is my first post (and I did search first).

I have just bought an Ultra and wanted to run IMAP from it, is this just as easy as using $apt to install the server or are there more efficient ways? I'm fluent in Linux so no problems with that but new to ReadyNAS so don't know whether I should go at this level?

Regards,
Tony

  • Thanks, have installed the addon and can now use apt.
I did notice that a lot of libraries are out of date ($apt-get upgrade) - is it wise upgrade these?
  • NO! You'll brick the Ultra. It's running a customised version of Debian 4 (etch)

What about apt? doesnt work on ultra 4?

apt works fine. Installing various packages is generally okay (assuming you know what you're doing), however, apt-get upgrade can brick your NAS. The ReadyNAS uses a customized version of Debian and many of the key packages are pinned, but doing an upgrade via apt is likely going to cause issues.

It's best just to update the firmware whenever the developers update it.
