Left and right hand? 4.2.25 NOT actually automatic?

It would appear that the right/left hands of Netgear don't seem to be in sync.

Here I WAS having issues with my new MBP and Time Machine, I allowed my ReadyNAS to automatic update its firmware and it downloaded 4.2.24 and not bothering to check what version actually got downloaded and installed I got very frustrated that my ReadyNAS still would not work with my MBP.

After doing some forum searching I came across the 4.2.25beta RC1 and installed it. This seems to have worked as well as later finding the official 4.2.25 release and installing THAT. However I had to download and install from a local drive as the 'automatic' was still fetching the 4.2.24 release! :x

Netgear: Please move the latest release to the automatic update folder so that others don't have to suffer the same frustration that I just did! (I was actually considering purchasing one of Apples "Time Capsules" to solve my remote-over-the-lan backup problem with my Netgear ReadyNAS!)

Personally I wouldn't set the updates to automatic. I'd rather keep control over when the updates are done.

If email alerts are configured, you will get an email message about the update at some point after it hits the Netgear download servers I wait for that unless I am wanting a critical bug fix.

I wouldent set "automatic" ether as I want to control when and if my ReadyNAS gets updated. However, if you manually click "update" all it will fetch for you is 4.2.24 and if you already have it installed you'll get a "you already have the latest version running" message. I had to find the release version, copy it to local and the update from there to get it loaded. :(

I would EXPECT that when Netgear anounces that a new version is available AND they recommend that the "easiest way" of updating is via automatic or simply clicking on "update" that doing so would actually work. :?

When I left home this AM my MBP was doing a TM backup. However the latest patch is not without faults. When my MBP attaches to the ReadyNAS TM it reports the FULL size of of the drive and free space on my ReadyNAS instead of reporting the size and remaining free space that I limited it to when enabling TM on the ReadyNAS. I don't wish to fill my ReadyNAS with TM backups. Hopefully this is simply a size reporting issue and TM is actually restricted to the space I assigned to it.

Being new to Apple products in general and this is my 1st MAC, I don't know when Apple broke their own network protocol or how long it took Netgear to come out with a fix, however I'm pleased that Netgear is willing to make updates so that their products remain compatible.

Well, now you know there is a delay.

If you are in a rush, download from here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24238/
    unzip first, then manually install.

Googling will find you the actual release, you don't need to settle for the RC or Beta.

It happened with OSX Mavericks (10.9), which was released on 22 October 2013.

The fix was in 4.2.25-RC1, which was made available for manual download on 16 October 2013.

Ahh! Good evidence that Netgear had access to or knowledge of Apples changes before Apple released them.

Job well done by Netgear. Formulating and making available a fix before Mavericks was available to the public. Nice.

While their follow through may be a bit lacking I'm happy with my 2 ReadyNAS's and considering adding a larger one (once their new OS's feature set fills out). :D
  • NETGEAR is part of Apple's Developer Program (anyone can be for $99/yr), which gives access to beta releases of OS's like Mavericks.

NETGEAR still hasn't announced the new firmware, even though their Support site lists it. I posted the forum posting here about it, copy/paste from previous that have mention of the auto-update. Hopefully, like mentioned above, the left hand will realize what the right hand is doing, and get in sync. *clap*
