Locked out of Duo

Hey all,

First time poster here, helping a friend with a DUO. I set this up for him over 3 yrs ago and now he tells me he can't get in (since he moved and changed routers) and he doesn't have a backup! We did the "/password_recovery" deal hoping this would work, but the admin email he doesn't have access to anymore. I know it is working cause I still get emails from the DUO about RAID events from time to time where it has to resync (I should have set myself as the admin - gonna do that next time).

From what I have read it looks like I need to try the OS Reinstall option here? Clearly I need to save the data on the drives as he has no backup (bone-head). We never did any firmware upgrades and great stuff to it when I set it up. He has always treated as a file server per say, no other packages were installed or setup that I remember.

Can anyone confirm this is what I need to do? Warranty ran out just about 4 months ago so I figure no over the phone tech support on this issue.

BTW, all seems to be functioning, I just can't get into the web interface cause I don't remember the user names and passwords that the owner setup 3 yrs ago. Not sure if there is any other back door options from what I have read on these forums and Google searches.

Thank you for all your help.

Hi unkis17, yes an OS Re-install should fix this. Sounds like your friend probably have a v1. Can you confirm by reading this?: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/

The instructions for an OS Re-install are in the hardware manual: http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/product/RND2000v1%20(ReadyNAS%20Duo%20v1)#searchResults

Note if you have a v2 the procedure is different.

Let us know how it goes. Yes, there is a backdoor which you can activate for use by NETGEAR Technical Support if requested, but this shouldn't be necessary for this problem as the OS Re-install should be enough.

thank you for the confirmation and additional instructions. I have successfully performed the OS Re-install. I have a 3TB external USB drive and want to immediately backup the data he has.

    Next biggest question.

Backup via CIFS over my network or try out this backup button on the unit (as I have never done it)? I have a fresh WD 3TB external drive. I can only guess that if I use the backup via the on NAS button that the NAS formats to something you can only read the backup via the NAS device in the future. (vs the network I can format NTFS and he can use backup any PC without the need for the NAS?)

(I know I can do some digging on this, but chances are it will be a few days before I get back to this task - I have 3 double shifts in a row after Monday)

Thanks again for the hand holding

You should backup across your network. You can't use a 3TB USB drive with the v1. The v1 only supports disks up to 2TB in capacity for both internal and external disks so backing up across your network is the way to go.
