Migrating Disks from NV+ to NVX

Hello Folks,

I'm new here ... I have / had an old NV+ NAS with four 1TB drives. I hadn't used it for years and when I got it going again the other day, all was well for a few hours, backing up my MBP with TimeMachine, until - I'm guessing here - the PSU failed mid-backup, tripping the ring main breaker; the plug fuse (13A!) is Ok and it won't restart.

Rather than try and repair or replace the PSU (my regular MO), I decided to buy a used NVX complete with disk trays - looking forward to the performance upgrade! So I've moved the four 1TB drives - in order - from the NV+ to the NVX and powered it up 'Normally'. Error message says that it can't mount the RAID disks ... Ok, so I boot into 'OS reinstall' mode, which seemed to be Ok until the same error message appeared. Any clues or ideas how to proceed? I'd really like to retain / recover the data on the RAID set.

I haven't yet tried connecting over the network ... will try this next and see if RAIDar can see it.

Many thanks in advance.

  • The power supply from the NVX can be moved to the NV+ if you are sure it's just the supply that's at fault.  But if something else took the supply out, you could end up killing the NVX supply.

I'm pretty sure the PSU failed on its own ... we have a very stable 230V AC supply here in Somerset, UK. Perhaps a filtered outlet would provide a smoother waveform though.

Excellent suggestion (why didn't I think of that?!) Then I can recover the data from the old disks before setting up the NVX afresh and disposing of the NV+ (does it have any value?) Cheers!

The trays do, though the ones with the round buttons aren't as good as the newer ones with the square buttons. They can be used in any desktop ReadyNAS.

Selling the trays separately (with the screws) would give the most return.  It could take a while to sell them though, since the NAS they fit are at least 13 years old.

As you found, that doesn't work.  The NVX uses 4.2.x  firmware and the NV+ uses 4.1.x  The disks are formatted differently.

It  is possible to mount the NV+ disks in a standard linux system.  You can also use RAID recovery software - for instance, R-Studio for Macs.  That requires a way to move the disks.  Though since these are small, you could just image them to a single larger drive.

You could also do a factory reset and start over.  You can't migrate the TM backups, but of course you would be giving up on the other files on the volume.

Note that while most 4.2.x systems can be migrated to the newer OS-6, the NVX is not one of them.  OS-6 requires a 64 bit architecture, and the NVX is only 32 bit.

Thanks for the info ... I will indeed do a factory refresh once I've recovered the data from the disks. The disks must be 15 years old at least ... maybe it's time to get some new ones.
